I remember an incident where having a RL veteran that had read all the 2e books worked for the GM, much better than having a party of all Ravenloft newbies. You see, they were up in the Balinoks for some reason (it was something involving Strahd, but I don't really remember the details). They were huddled around their campfire when the GM announced they heard singing.

RL Veteran: (with immediate, sinking dread) Oh no.

The other players rapidly picked up that their veteran was not happy, and the sentiment began to spread. They did the standard suite of spot, listen, detect magic and knowledge checks, along with arming themselves, all to little effect. Then the GM said "you see the form of a young woman-"

RL Veteran: It's Jezra Wagner! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Anyway, the party ran screaming down the mountainside, and once the veteran had launched into a long explanation of who Jezra Wagner was, they never went back into the Balinoks again, ever. It was blatant metagaming, to be sure. But considering most people don't realize Jezra is terrifying until she freezes half the party into ice, I consider it a net win on all sides there.

PS. In case a player or NPC did that, I wouldn't go near that swamp.
Wait..thats an AUD? i thought that was fine dining.

Ya know, now I have the feeling that Eric Cartman would make a way scarier than average darklord. Just ask Scott Tenorman.
