Markovia soundtrack?

Post by Dr Carnivean »

I am getting ready to run a modified version of Neither Man Nor Beast and am trying to come up with a soundtrack to use. Normally before I run a scenario, I burn a CD with various tracks from my CD collection that fit that particular game; fight music, NPC & villain themes, background mood music, domain atmospheric music, etc. I've used a lot of stuff from Midnight Syndicate and Nox Arcana in the past.
I'm having trouble coming up with ideas of music to include on the Markovia CD though. I was thinking of maybe using some tracks from the Ghost and the Darkness soundtrack, but that seems to be long out of print and probably a real pain to get hold of. Anyone have any suggestions of what might be good Markovia inspired music?

BTW here is a pic of the miniatures terrain I built for Markov's estate which is the backdrop for the climax of the scenario.

I still need to touch it up a little before the game and I am in the process of building the perimeter fence of the estate. I also made miniatures of Markov in a couple different forms which I will post when I have them finished.

You might try:
  • King Kong
    The Village
Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
All three contain tracks that suggest jungle, oppression and primitive rituals. And some great tracks for other situations as well.

As a matter of fact, I'm currently looking for horror-themed soundtracks for my game as well. Any you would recommend? Ravenous and One Hour Photo have been very good for my games, but I can't keep using them all the time.

Also, very nice miniature terrain :)

Oh yeah those three would be good! I knew there were movie soundtracks that would work that I just wasn't thinking of. I'll have to listen to some sample tracks and see what would work best.

As for some stuff from my own collection,
Nox Arcana's Shadows of the Raven is great. It's all music inspired by Poe stories. It's especially good for the more culturally advanced domains like Dementlieu, Richemulot, or Mordent.

Midnight Syndicate's 13th Hour is also very good and I've used a lot of tracks from it. Works well for haunted houses or creepy, desolate places.

I've used tracks from just about all of the Midnight Syndicate and Nox Arcana albums, though I've probably used the most from 13th Hour and Shadow of the Raven. Generally each album is composed around a particular theme, so for example, Grimm Tales has good stuff for dealing with shadow fey or boogymen. The only thing with them is that a lot of them have spoken parts here or there, so it's best to pick and choose tracks.

The Black Hole soundtrack has John Barry's excellent score and is now available on I-Tunes. The main theme is very haunting although it may be recognizable to those who grew up with that movie. Six Robots, Durant is Dead, and Start the Countdown are two other very good tracks from that soundtrack.

Resident Evil 10 Year Anniversary is a collection of music from the video game series and has some good low key ominous tracks as well as a number of good tension or battle tracks

The Castlevania: Symphony of the Night soundtrack is another one that I've used a lot of tracks from.

And thanks for the compliment on the scenery :-)

Wow that's awesome! That set up looks great! I have no suggestions for music, I just wanted to say that is a spectacular terrain.

I stumbled across this site a few days ago searching for some sound affects for a multimedia presentation I was giving... has a fair selection of sound effects a music for sampling (or buying, if you're willing to shell out for that kind of stuff)

So far, the Horror and Main Theme Songs CDs are really the only ones I've checked out, but I'm rather impressed. Hope this helps!

Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy-various

I have used these soundtracks plenty and they have some tracks that may fit the bill but plenty of others for other times.

As for movie soundtracks I think that you may want to look more for animal sounds and perhaps natural sounds. Tribal musics may also work if right in tone...

Great terrain by the way! :D

I used "jungel noises" - screeches, roars, bird singing, ape sounds etc. Worked well.

Been going over my game music, and I think the "Ravenous" movie soundtrack should be ideal for the adventure as well. Lots of primitive drum stuff combined with disorienting horror.

I just listened to a couple of the tracks from the Ravenous soundtrack on youtube and you're right, they're exactly what I'm looking for. It looks like it's still in print, so I'll have to go pick one up or order from Amazon. I've never actually seen that movie, but now I really want to check it out after reading a little about it on wiki.
