Music in Ravenloft

Five words for Borca or any other high-culture domain: Telemann's Suite in A Minor. Good old-fashioned minor key Baroque music that reeks of duels and political intrigue. My husband's character is Borcan, and ever since the Borca arc of the campaign he's started playing Telemann on the drive down to gaming in order to help him get in his character's head; the association is that perfect.

For shadow fey: Pan's Labyrinth. 'Nuff said.

Hazlan has always kinda brought to mind the "God of War" soundtrack, for me.

Now, citing God of War will about balance the fact that Dementlieu always reminds me of the "Les Miserables" soundtrack--and that on occasion I'm actively moved by "Do You Hear The People Sing." Musicals! Yeah.

The Goblin, if only because their keyboardist now looks like a creepy old man ready to jump on any nubile female in his path.

Thanks for reminding me about Goblin, now I've gotta go dig out my soundtrack to Tenebre. Their album "Roller" is pretty good too, and as far as I know is their only non-soundtrack album.


As far as other music goes, I've seen a few people on this board talk about running Arkandale as an Old South domain, and pretty much every other old Southern ballad is about either murder or ghosts. The soundtrack for Cold Mountain has some good examples of this. Other ballads that may fit well include "Pretty Polly," "Little Sadie," and "The Willow Garden."

Basically the moral of all these songs is that if you're a girl with blonde hair and you're out a'courtin with a guy but won't be his bride, never ever go near any body of water with said guy. Especially if you come from a place that ends with "ville" "ford" or is called "County" anything.

As far as symphonic music is concerned, you really can't go wrong with Ravel's arrangement of Mussorsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Hector Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique could also work quite well, especially the last two movements, "Marche au supplice" (March to the Scaffold) and "Songe d'une nuit de sabbat" (Song of the Sabbath Night).

Oh, another great soundtrack comes from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Absolutely wonderful soundtrack, and an equally awesome game.

Hi all,

I don't know if any brought this band up yet, but since this has been quiet for a long time, I didn't read the rest.

I found some time ago a unique Death metal band called Haggard and I thought that this piece would be perfect for a Ravenloft mood (IMHO).

If you can take the death growls, try and listen to it. You'll be surprised, if you don't know Haggard.

Wow... Not a one of you mentioned the Ravenous movie soundtrack... I don't know that it is the most variable or flexable soundtrack but the highpitched violin tracks are great... Some of the other tracks useful to.

I also suggest the Chrono Cross soundtrack, for plenty of different situations and combat.

Pirates of the Carribian 1 and 2 are of course useful for high seas adventures but PotC2's soundtrack has much more flexability to me...

And lastly if you don't mind older game music than Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4 6 & 7, and Secret of Evermore are also useful on some tracks.

Also, some Vivaldi pieces work surprisingly well for Dementlieu. I think he's the only guy I've heard who could write angry Baroque music: you could set a chase scene to a few of the movements in The Four Seasons. (Summer Storm is particularly awesome.) Good stuff, if you like your harpsichords.

OMG, just found something on Pandora that screams "Port d'Elhour" at the top of its lungs. Louis Moreau Gottschalk, "A Night in the Tropics", movement 2: Festa Criolla. Composed by a Victorian-era New Orleansian, no less: I swear, it's like John Philips Sousa playing Tito Puente. Wild stuff.
