What happened to Dragon and Dungeon magazines?

What happened with those magazines? Will they stop being published completely? Will they keep being published only at the web?
I still see them in the WotC site. I think that although they're not printed anymore, they're still in the loop via electronic means.

Yeah, they still exist, just no longer in paper form, and Paizo no longer has anything to do with it. They'll continue in electronic form onthe WotC website, and you can currently access them for free. Once 4e comes out, however, you will only be able to get them if you pay an undisclosed subscription fee.

From what I understand, Dragon is now D&D insider, and for the momment D&D insider specialise into preview of 4th edition.

In my opinion, "true article" will come online when online subscription will be charged to the players.

Yeah, they still exist, just no longer in paper form, and Paizo no longer has anything to do with it. They'll continue in electronic form onthe WotC website, and you can currently access them for free. The fee is undisclosed but they have given an interval where it should fall. I can't find the proper link where they said that, unfortunately, but that was a common question in Wizards site and I remember seeing two hard bounds for the subscription price.

IIRC, they claimed it'd lie somewhere between what a subscription to the hardcopy Dragon or Dungeon used to cost, and the price of a subscription to an online game like WoW. Subscribing will get you access to both the magazine titles, including compiled pdf copies at the end of each month, plus some other perks for in-game use.

Judging by current content, in other words not worth the cost.

I miss my magazines...at least they made veiled (thinly, but still veiled) references to the mists.

True, if the number and quality of articles remains as it is so far, it'll be a ripoff. OTOH, as WotC's not getting paid for these issues, either through subscription fees or advertising, they might not be able to afford as many articles as we're used to.

Dungeon and Dragon used to be published by TSR but when WotC bought the game they licensed the magazines out to Paizo to publish. Then they took them back last year.

Now they're at the fun in-between period.
They started them up again but its part of the free subscription so they're not paying much and they're still building up the slush pile of submissions.
Plus, since 4E is coming out, they're not taking articles related to heavy game mechanics because they'll just be ignored.

Hmmm... IMO it's better that way. Electronic magazines you download. Sure now that's free and almost 4th edition, the magazines will be rubbish but later this will improve.

Kudos to the WotC that kept the tradition of the magazines up and going even if that means they do it for free now.

Still though, the quality and quantity of the articles they put up now, during this free period, say a lot about what to expect from WotC when they publish those magazines in paid format. And right now, what they're saying is, "Don't bother."

For the moment, magazines are a big publicity for 4th, I hope to not have to pay for publicity...
