If you're presenting kelpies in their old 2E form, it might be better if we give them a different name. The 3E kelpie (Fiend Folio) is definitely a fey, and we don't want to confuse people who are relatively new to the game as to which monster we're talking about. Something like "kelp-woman" would be more descriptive. There's also the kelp angler (also FF), if we're looking for additional killer algae to include, or if you need something to base the plant-kelpie's stats on.
I have an adventure for a 3e fey/fiendish kelpie already written, if you would care to see it? (It's in the CotN format.)

Sounds cool, but not necessarily what the VRF needs. Maybe it could be included in QtR15, as a handy opportunity for DMs to incorporate ideas from this netbook into their campaigns?

You can e-mail it to me if you like, and maybe DeepShadow also, so he can see what you did with the fey version of kelpies.

To clarify: I am statting both versions of "kelpies," both the plant and the fey version. I have lots of ideas for both, but I'm always looking for more, if Nathan or anyone else is interested. I'm looking for a different name for the plant kelpie, which for now in my notes is called the "marine" kelpie.

Remember the "Swarm-Shifter" template in Libris Mortis? Maybe we could do a kelp version of that?

What about (somebody PLEASE shoot me down) a sentient plankton, an experiment of Easan or Mordenheim. Not particularly a swam, but just one, teeny-tiny plankton. That posseses great mental capabilities.

There, shot you down, happy?

I do think that aquatic swarm-shifters is a *brilliant* idea. I consider them to be one of the best creations of that book.

Swarm of undead piranhas anyone?

From Wikipedia: The kelpie is a supernatural shape-shifting water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. In Orkney a similar creature was called the Nuggle, and in Shetland a similar creature was called the Shoopiltee, the Njogel, or the Tangi . It also appears in Scandinavian folklore where in Sweden it is known by the name Bäckahästen, the brook horse. In Norway it is called nøkken, where the horse shape is often used, but is not its true form. Another similar Scottish water horse is the Each uisge.

The Bad Wind, from the Kargatane Guide to Fiends, deserves at least an honourable mention, at least unless it made the Nocturna Sea guide.

Also the monster hunter in it might be a useful character

A monster idea I hope you guys might like:

The Sealskinner

Everyone has heard the legend of the Selkie, the beautiful people of the sea who transform into seals, then back into human form. The Selkie must remove his or her sealskin when transforming to human form, and anyone who manages to seize that skin can force the Selkie to remain human and stay by their side. This legend has also spread to the shores of the Core -- and not only human ears have heard it.
The Sealskinner is one of the creatures that heard the story, and has used it to sate its own desire for fresh meat.
The Sealskinner is a vile aberration of nature with inborn magical powers, which travels, shapechanged into a seal, with groups of natural seals (or even shadows a group of real Selkies if the latter exist in the Realm of Dread), waiting until humans notice their presence. It uses spells of illusion and suggestion to make anyone who observes the seals think of the Selkie legend and to come closer. It then leaves out its own special sealskin. The instant that some unfortunate seizes the skin, it animates, entangling the victim and killing them by a combination of smothering and injections with acid. Once the victim is dead, the hideous Sealskinner leaves its nearby hiding place, drags the body into the sea and there feasts.

I was looking for info on the Shay-lot (toying with an idea on the Caller). Where can I find something on them?

For the Shay-Lot, I'd go with the Deep Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos. I can even make the entire story, "The Call of Cthulhu" into a series of adventures. For the Voodoo, make Sandover more tolerant of humans, and let him set up a cult outside of Marias D'Turascon. For the dreams, just use traditional Illithids, and have Shay-lot cultists attack the party during a boat ride, then trap them in Saragoss. Maybe Draga Salt-Biter is a high priest of Shay-Lot?

If you'd like to write about the Shay-lot, Jakob, please pm me about it. An idea that creepy should probably be discussed out of the public eye, IMO.

I'll PM you with a (rather simple) idea for the caller as soon as I can. ;)

This would be perfect for a new Vallaki Witch article, I must get my thinking cap on for ideas.
