Rereading this thread, I wondered if the DL to follow Godefroy would necessarily be the Master of Gryphon Hill? Could the house have its own criteria for choosing a master?

Resurrecting this thread in the light of the epic RL thread. Putting final rest to Godefroy or any of the other DL's/villains who have undying souls would be a worthy task for an epic party, no? What would it take to fully destroy Malken, or Lukas, or even Toben?

What's the difference between incorporeal and ethereal?DeepShadow of FoS wrote: Thu Mar 01, 2007 8:58 am
If you're looking to throw some intrigue into Gryphon Hill dynamics, another thought would be to interpret the wording of the vortex very strictly: it doesn't affect incorporeals, only ethereals. Depending how you interpret that, the vortex might not affect shadows, or possibly even wraiths or spectres. Any of these creatures might flaunt their immunity before Godefroy, or even slink around Gryphon Hill unchecked, currying favors among those on Godefroy's leash.
(sorry if that's a stupid question. I just never played an adventure with ghosts before.)

Re: Godefroy's history and present!
Ethereal entities are present on the Ethereal Plane, which invisibly overlaps the Material Plane. Ethereal entities can perceive the Material Plane, but not interact with it, while entities on the Material Plane cannot normally perceive the Ethereal Plane.
Some ethereal entities (ghosts in particular) can manifest on the Material Plane, allowing them to form a visible but incorporeal body on the Material Plane that can interact with things, to some extent.
Some entities can be incorporeal without being ethereal, because they somehow have an intangible body that does not exist on the Ethereal Plane. A ghost is incorporeal to material beings, but it has a tangible body on the Ethereal Plane, so if adventurers were to somehow go there, they could touch and attack the ghost as if it were a normal being.
I don't think it is necessarily well explained in 3rd edition rules (at least, the ones I have read) how some things gain an ethereal body while others don't. For example, specters and ghosts are both incorporeal undead, but specters don't have bodies on the Ethereal Plane, which seems very odd to me. Ravenloft suggests that undead shadows can be like ghosts, but with their tangible bodies on the Plane of Shadow, rather than the Ethereal Plane, but that is not part of the core rules.
