These two movies were released in the early 1980s and I watched them in the UK in 1990. They were excellent - a modern day take on a Greek tragedy. For a long time, they were never released in America, but this year I found they were finally available on DVD from Netflix. I'm hoping to buy my own copy later on.
Well worth viewing, in my opinion. The cinematography is luscious and the characters are colorful. Were it not for the tragic plot, there would be plenty of sweeping vista moments of the beauty of the French countryside.
An excellent example, too, of how to work in unknowingly evil acts into your Ravenloft campaigns. The film starts off with a few acts of greed and avarice, which gradually escalate beyond control. An interesting sign of how a villain of a piece can still be motivated by realistic goals, and how fate can make all the difference between a criminal and a commoner.

And agreed on these two movies - they are excellent. Vive Pagnol
