If I am not mistaken there is this "phantom lover" domain lord of a pocket domain in one of the 2e books I have, dont remember now which, they're back home in Greece. I think it was the "tales from the crypt".
Anyway, if you can get a hold of it it has some really good info that could descrobe the phantom of the opera pretty well, its been a long time, maybe I am just wrong :?
At first I thought nightmares were a symptom of their madness.
It turns out, they were the cause...

Hi all,
for some inspiration and a twist on the story of the phantom of the opera you could also read one of terry pratchett's discworld novels. Maskerade deals with a discworld version of the Phantom of the Opera.

spoilers

the story is about an opera house where people are mysterioulsly dying in accidents. ( the sort of accidents you prefer to call accidents). It seems the ghost of the opera, formerly a sort of mascotte for the opera house, has become a murderer. As it turns out there are actually two ghosts. One is a confused young man, who lives a better life when he wears the mask. The other one is the director of music, who embezzles money and kills everyone who finds him out, wearing the mask of the first ghost, so all blame will eventually fall on the confused young man.
(listen ot yourself wil you, you recognize him, because he wears a mask?)

perhaps this is usable.

I'm afraid the Phantom Lover has nothing to do with the Phantom of the Opera except the name. The Lover is clearly a supernatural being, with no apparent connection to music, and he seduces bereft women to their deaths rather than killing in proprietary defense of a specific woman he's obsessed with.

Indeed,

The Phantom Lover is the incarnation of that old myth of the greivng widow who cuases her dead lover to rise and drag her into the grave with him.

What do you suppose the abilities would be on the Phantom's mask?

I'd say somethign that would give the wearer a big loud booming voice, possibly with a ventriloquism effect that allows them to laugh sinisterly and be heard throughout the building.

I was thinking of it maybe acting like an old 2nd Edition ring of human influence. But the thing is, I don't know if that item has been translated over to 3.5.

Ok, found an update for the ring of human influence. I think that the charisma bonus along with the abilities makes sense. Here it is as posted by warlockco: "+2 enhancement bonus to Charisma. It also allows its wearer to cast Dominate Person (DC 17) and Suggestion (DC 15) once a day each." I was thinking more of charm person than dominate person though.

Thank you Rafael for bumping this thread. :)

What would you guys think about having to roll a Will save, or your character sings everything just like the characters do in the movie/play? I guess that would be a curse on the opera house, right?

Dragon Archive has a spell called Captain's Voice that does this. Let me find you a reference...

Here you go, already did my own update for Reckonings:
2E wrote:Captain’s Voice
(Alteration)
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: 1 turn/level
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: One creature
Saving Throw: Neg.

Ship captains are often recipients of this spell, cast by an associate wizard or bard. Captain’s voice allows the target to speak in a normal voice (or louder, if desired) and be heard clearly in a 90’-radius area, as if the listeners were standing beside the speaker. Ship captains and military commanders often use the captain’s voice spell for giving commands to large groups of people simultaneously. The caster’s voice carries through wooden walls without restriction, but stone walls greater than 6” thick stop the captain’s voice from carrying. Obviously, this spell can be used effectively within wooden homes, towers, or fortifications as well.

Willing subjects of this spell need make no saving throw. An unwilling target can be affected by the spell, making his words easily heard throughout the area. A person so affected notices that his voice is magnified on a successful Wisdom check, made once each turn. The material component is a small bullhorn made of ivory or horn. A common clerical variant of this
spell is known as priest’s sermon, because some priesthoods allow an identical spell (from the sphere of All) used during religious ceremonies or worship in large temples.
3.5 wrote:Captain’s Voice
Illusion (glamour) [language-dependent]
Level: Brd1, Clr2, Sor/Wiz2
Components: V,S,M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1 min/level
Saving Throw: Will (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

Captain’s voice allows the target to speak in a normal voice (or louder, if desired) and be heard clearly. The spell grants a +10 bonus to Listen checks to hear and understand the target's speech, ignoring check penalties for any wooden barriers. The target is not entitled to the bonus to hear himself; an unwilling target notices that his voice is magnified on a successful Wisdom check DC 10. The material component is a small bullhorn made of ivory or horn.

Ship captains and military commanders often use the captain’s voice spell for giving commands to large groups. The clerical variant of this spell is known as priest’s sermon, and is used during religious ceremonies or worship in large temples.

The problem is, how make such a domain sufficiently different from the opera in the Nightmare lands or Scaena? :)
