slaymates?
slaymates?
How are slaymates handled in ravenloft (see the wizards of the coast book of the undead)?

Same as they are anywhere else? To be honest, I never really saw the reason behind them (child dead through carelessness boosts necromancy metamagic feats for everyone in the vicinity? Ok...) but that described a lot of Liber Mortis. Lots of stats, with no real good idea of why you would create all these dead creatures, considering so many of them cross over so much.
That said, as a necromancer's "pet" they're rather handy, and my current off-screen foe (a necromancer corpse-creature) has one lurking in his lab.

It may be in the FR book as well, I just know that it turns up in LM. Wizards do have a tendancy to reprint important stuff rather than demand you buy another book, which I rather like.Miriel wrote:I thought the Lichloved-feat was from FR?
Though there is always the goddess of undying love
And yes, that Goddess...
Though on a similar topic, there were bits of the book the I liked, and use in Ravenloft. The Requiem feat which let Bards use their abilities on the Undead, or the Dirgesinger prestige class. Just a shame that a lot of the book was so... shallow, I guess. Brainless monster after brainless monster. Even the in-theory smart undead were too one-dimensional to use without a lot of work. I'll stick with the Van Richten's Guides, thanks. Give me one basic, simple creature, and a horde of ideas on how to customise and adapt it.

I haven't read it in detail, mainly because I don't have it, but I liked some things. Like Bard-related Undeadtaming feats. Nice if you don't have a cleric in the party
As for the monsters ::shrug:: I don't place that much importance on them.

Have to fight, cause I know
in the end it's worthwhile,
that the pain that I feel slowly fades away.
It will be alright
Pale, Within Temptation

Actually, the 'Lichloved' feat can be found in the Book fo Vile Darkness (page 49). Unless it is listed under an alternate name or outside of the feats section, this feat is not reprinted within Libris Mortis. While WotC do tend to reprint information in more than one book, I don't believe this to be the case in this particular instance.Bloody Morgan wrote:It may be in the FR book as well, I just know that it turns up in LM. This subject has been brought up a couple times before, but I agree with you on this point. The book does have some good ideas and information in it. However, the majority of the book tends to be rather shallow (especially in comparison to books such as the Van Ricthen's Guides).Bloody Morgan wrote:Though on a similar topic, there were bits of the book the I liked, and use in Ravenloft.

Dammit. Now that you say that, I realise that you are completly right. It's in Vile Darkness.Jason of the Fraternity wrote:Actually, the 'Lichloved' feat can be found in the Book fo Vile Darkness (page 49). I would tend to agree with this sentiment. The slaymate write-up (as weel as some of the other monsters) is rather poorly detailed, especially concerning their particular powers and effects. I could see a necromancer using one as some sort of assistant/squire to help boost their meta-magic feats, but the idea of carrying one around in a papoose seemed rather lame to me.Bloody Morgan wrote: I never really saw the reason behind them (child dead through carelessness boosts necromancy metamagic feats for everyone in the vicinity? To add a more Ravenloftian touch, I could see a slaymate being the result of a necromancer's neglected child. The intense studying of ancient magics prevented the necromancer from tending to his/her child while they were alive and well. However, after death, the slaymates powers have proven to be rather beneficial to the necromancer's continued studies. Through death, the parent has finally found an interest in his/her child...
Glad to have been of some help.Bloody Morgan wrote:Now that you say that, I realise that you are completly right. It's in Vile Darkness.
