Thanks for saying so on the clever part Rock.
And I guess yeah if they remote drone control it somehow with their soul and leave themselves defenseless it would be an interesting twist and also discomforting for the often paranoid darklords who tend to use such magic.
Since the spell has no remote control inherent to it this would be further original magic but more likely just some way to communicate to them at a distance to give orders would likely work for those not willing to take such a risk.

True. As you point out, as written this is good reference for how the spell should work in game.
Unless of course the DM/Darkpowers want to twist it further from being an illusion or such for the plot or have a variant spell version made by an NPC as written it is just and illusionary construct of sorts.
No healing short of magical repair, has no soul to steal nor any way to hold one as presented and thus is just a close copy of the original version of the creature that cannot heal and has copied memories and skills.
I am guessing then the question is do you think it could be used effectively as a tool to leave the domain for diplomacy or do you think it would be limited or even if just in your opinion do you think it could convincingly portray the darklord?
I know in pathfinder you make a disguise check to see how good a copy the visual physical likeness of the simulacra is of the original but the personality is not exactly said to be any different than the original other than being subservient to their creator.

Agreed, and while I tend to use 3.5 and Pathfinder rules 5e does help with some crunch questions and issues to flesh out how spells and other things work.
I tend to agree that this is how the spell works as written even in the previous editions. But do these rules perhaps cause conflicts with say copying a darklord and or using it to act in their stead outside the domain? I don't see any at first glance but perhaps there are some issues we are not seeing.
I mean it is meant to copy the darklord so how restrictive are darklord curses effects if they are copied to it? If it takes some aspects of the curse onto itself then can it even leave the domain? I figure it can because it isn't the darklord but in that case is it not able to copy gifts and curses effects given by the darkpowers?
If it does not take these aspects granted by the darkpowers it isn't as much of an issue for it to leave the domain but it certainly would be missing some powers and ability but also some drawbacks yet it would look, sound and act like the darklord.

Good points on the requirements for the 2e version. Those spells are fairly potent just to make a simulacra compared to later rules and if using 2e rules I could see it being a poor replacement for diplomacy or deception.
Further editions from 3.0 and up certainly removed some of those hurdles with the limitations to the simulacra in their crunch but using 2e to fill in gaps or understand what limits might remain in unexplained areas helps.
So any other issues you can think of in using Simulacra on a darklord and or sending said simulacra darklord out of the domain?
Anything the darkpowers might object to?

I mean I like the picture... Cute in a disturbing way...
But ironically I think Azalin might not have the Simulacrum spell on his spell list at least as far as I remember and from what I have seen in the books I checked... So I think he might be jealous of those wizards that can make fancy snowmen!
As to the regen and phylactery I have to side that the spell rules they don't heal except in specific ways to repair them and when they "die" the spell ends and they have no soul to go to a phylactery or such anyways. They are just an illusion and unlike other spells specifically changed in Ravenloft the Simulacrum spell was not changed specifically.
But if the darkpowers wanted to twist one casting done by a lich to do so that would likely be a very unique occurrence in a plot and could certainly make for an interesting problem when the simulacrum becomes more than it was meant to be. I mean it is shadow magic so the precedent of it coming to life after it would end could make this a rare punishment or thing to torment a lich who tries to abuse such magic and maybe even lead to it creating a competator or enemy if the rogue simulacrum turned against them.
