Darklord Simulacrum Question
Hey everyone... Quick question I thought of while going over some ideas for a plotline.
Do you think a magic using Darklord would or should be allowed by the Darkpowers to use a Simulacrum to appear to leave their domain or to handle negotiations abroad? I mean as far as I have understood it, the copy has all the memories and personality of the creator and could act as them or even know their plans or such.
Other than being shadow based illusion magic it has no real ruling I have found against it in the rules as to it being different than normal for the spell and it isn't really the Darklord leaving their domain.
So I imagine it might not be a problem in view of the Darkpowers unless the Simulacrum's memories or experiences can extracted and perhaps shared by the creator somehow through it.
I mean I have the idea to use this in a future game and while I don't see a problem with it if others here have more insight to share that would be appreciated.

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
I don't see any problem with it. It's clever, and there's precedent with Strahd using magic jar to act outside of Barovia.
You might add an element of discomfort to the experience, and paranoid fear about the body 'back home' being defenseless, but that's pretty much it. ^_^

I checked what Simulacrum is and now I'm off to draw Azalin as a snowman. See you later.

So here's my first sketch. Pretty funny as it is, but I'm hoping to bring in more of the horrific details.

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
I like how the crown is turning out, but I'm struggling with the mouth. There has to be a better way to draw teeth. Also, in the reference picture there's that rotten area in the corner of Azalin's mouth, and I wish I could replicate that as an area where the snow is melting - but IDK how to draw that.TheArcaneWeirdo wrote: Wed Dec 24, 2025 7:50 am https://share.sketchpad.app/25/13f-684e-8c12ea.png

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
Follow-up question:
If a creature with regeneration or rejuvenation abilities creates a simulacrum of themselves, does the simulacrum also gain these abilities?
And if it's a lich, are they tied to the same phylactery?

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
It is an illusion spell, not a necromantic one (as would be anything having to do with rejuvenation or soul trapping stuff), so no there is no chance to mimic this, especially for 2e where Illusion and Necromancy schools were directly opposite and prohibited from one specialist spellcaster of one to use a spell from the other. Also simulacra are just that, a simulacrum, having no soul.

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
For 5E, I would say no. This would be a case of an exception superseding a general rule.
The spell, Simulacrum, creates a construct that uses the same game statistics as the creature to be copied (there are some other restrictions the construct has as well that are not pertinent to the discussion; such as not being able to cast Simulacrum, not being able to take short/long rests, etc)
Regeneration, as an ability certainly falls within the 'Traits' section of the stat block.
However, in the spell's description it includes the following statement [emphasis added]: 'If the simulacrum takes damage, the only way to restore its Hit Points is to ...'
So, for example, in the case of a troll-simulacrum ... there would be no regeneration because even though the stat block very clearly says that the base-creature has regeneration and the trait regains hit points in such-and-such a fashion, the exception associated with the spell that created it would supersede the general stat block of the creature.
Similarly, for a lich, there is an ability tied to its spirit jar (which a lich-simulacrum would not have, as having a spirit jar is not part of the base creature's stat block), but even if it was ruled that the lich-simulacrum was somehow tied to its creator's spirit jar or obtained one on its own after being created ... the spirit jar trait of the base creature mentions a method of regaining hit points ... which a simulacra cannot do outside of the description of the spell that created it.
Further, the spell describes what happens when the construct reaches 0 hit points remaining ... so if there were any disagreement between this rules exception of what happens when the construct reaches 0 hit points and the general stat block entry of a what happens when a lich reaches 0 hit points remaining ... the spell would supersede the stat block.
So, for 5E anyway, lich-simulacra would not be created in possession of, nor would they be able to use, a spirit jar.

Re: Darklord Simulacrum Question
In 2e rules, using simulacrum will potentially encounter issues with the other spells needed for it to work. It requires reincarnation and limited wish. There are multiple lists of altered spells for 2e, and I'm looking specifically at the version from Domains of Dread, since (AFAIK) that was the final list of spell alterations.
Reincarnation has a 1% chance per caster level of turning the target into an undead of a type with Hit Dice equal to the target's level (so 20-50% of the original's level, based on the description in simulacrum).
Limited wish works only if the Dark Powers allow it, and they will always attempt to pervert the effect of the spell.
The 2e version also doesn't have all the skills and knowledge of the original, but only has 40-65% of their knowledge (granted via the limited wish). So, it'll work if the Dark Powers are in favor of it, but it could backfire if the reincarnation goes wrong when infusing it with life, and it may or may not have the set of skills the Darklord is hoping for, since it'll have 20-50% of their levels and 40-65% of their knowledge.
