A Question About Mithril in the Land of Mists

Post by Guardian of Twilight »

Hello, everyone. It's been a while since I posted here! I had a question about mithril recently, and I wondered if anyone knew where to get it in Ravenloft. I know Gennifer and Laurie comment about it, as well as black mithril, but I wondered what domains one might find it in. I was thinking Sithicus, as Dragonlance has dragonmetal, which is simply mithril, but it isn't mentioned in the Gazetteer at all.

If you've used mithril in your games, where do you have it come from? Do you think that Sithicus is a logical choice, or is there a reason why it wouldn't be there, in your opinion?

I look forward to reading your thoughts on the matter. Thank you all for your time.

How about Darkon? They have a thriving Dwarf community and mining industry.

Am I the only one surprised that D&D has Mithril at all? Like, by that very Tolkien-specific name?
Like, calling halflings 'hobbits' would be copying, but Mithril is fine?

They get around this by calling it mithral.

Wanted to reply yesterday, but all I got was Too Many Requests as a notification. No clue as to why.

That's interesting; I don't usually do a great deal with Darkon. Thank you for that. Also, what were your thoughts about it being in Sithicus?

Do many of you use mithril in your campaigns in Ravenloft? How rare do you make it in your campaigns, and do you all use black mithril very often, or at all?

That's what I was told as well. I just can't stand seeing it spelled that way.

There could be deposits in Sithicus, but the only mine in Sithicus I know of are the Veidrava salt mines.

If you want to make it really rare and dangerous to get, put it in Bluetspur. Otherwise, I agree with Darkon being the best Core domain for it, since it's the closest to "normal" D&D fantasy (and AFAIK there is no mention of mithril/mithral on Krynn, which is why dragonmetal was invented in its 3e incarnation).

Mount Lament in Keening is said to have valuable minerals, so there could be another source.

But you have to hide during the night! :banshee:

It's pretty dangerous by day, too!

It's possible there are mineral deposits, but there's every chance that Baltoi is still down there. Her presence might have weird effects on any ore you pick up - and woe on anyone whose digging wakes her up. Double woe if she finds the tunnel you came in by and makes it to the surface.

The same applies to the Mountains of Misery. The fracture that connects the Shadow Rift and the Mountains of Misery, exiting through a goblin lair, is guarded by a balor that does not have a reality wrinkle.
