Computer games of Ravenloft

Post by Isolde »

We got two party-based rpgs for Ravenloft. I had fun with both despite bugs etc i thought they were amazing (very atmospheric), especially at the time when they came out. The character generation was very theatrical and really great and the only real complain i had, other than the bugs, was that i could not make 4 characters from the start and had to have 2+2 npcs. For those that have not played them, they are in a way campaign adventures as you start at level 1 and finish 15th to 20th level or something.

with all the published adventures for ravenloft 2e, i was hoping we would get a series of games but it never happened.

We could have had a Night of the Walking Dead adventure, an Adam's Wrath one (just based on the monster of Frankenstein with little to do with the adventure), and many others. But we got nothing.

What do you guys think? Which adventures, or their basic idea you think would work best into becoming a game like those 2?

We also got Stone and Blood, which exists because someone, somewhere, looked at Ravenloft and thought, “that’s the best setting for a dodgy 3D fighting game.”

I really wanted to see the different graphics for each adventure and domain as the Stone Prophet had that Egyptian stuff in the inventory screens etc.

And different character generation gimmicks, vistani cool but we could get vistani plus a different one for each domain (just like menzoberranzan had the lolth priestess one). :lucas:

I presume that Anhg Krag is a longtime krokodil* user, right?...

* The street name in Russia for homemade desomorphine is krokodil (Russian: крокодил, crocodile), possibly related to the chemical name of the precursor α-chlorocodide, or the resemblance of the skin damage caused by the drug to a crocodile's leather.

This could be added to Doktor Vjorn Horstman's collection of wierd science experiments, the effects of the drug could be similar to barkskin with also adding a relief from pain, but the drawback is that users get easily addicted and prolonged use can cause serious damage to the skin, blood vessels, bone, and muscles, sometimes requiring limb amputation in long-term users. The frequent occurrence of tissue damage and infection among illicit users are what gained the drug its nickname of the flesh-eating drug, or the zombie drug, as homemade versions made under inadequate conditions contain multiple impurities and toxic substances that lead to severe tissue damage and subsequent infection as a direct consequence of use. Gangrene, phlebitis, thrombosis (blood clots), pneumonia, meningitis, septicaemia (blood infection), osteomyelitis (bone infection), liver and kidney damage, brain damage,

I would never add a troll player (in Stone Prophet is some anomaly or something so it would be a magically mind-altered allied monster in a tabletop session) on the tabletop but the peculiarities in the computer games are like "i detest planescape tabletop but the computer game Torment rules."

Fascinating idea, I loved the presentation of the SSI games. The Ravenloft ones were certainly better than others (SPELLJAMMER). So, that could be a fun direction to look at.

A bit skirting topic, but I did also see some mods that incorporated Ravenloft themes... Could be of interest. Someone has been making homages to the setting via Baldur's Gate II. I haven't played them yet, so I can't speak for how well they mix with canon... but yeah, Ravenloft homage in an old bioware engine.
I muse of grim fates in The Lands of the Mists. You can see more here.

the visuals of the ravenloft games were a huge part of its atmosphere, making ravenloft games in the infinity engine would be fun but the atmosphere would remain inferior even if the games are excellent.

If you have access to Neverwinter Nights, there are mods that have Ravenloft adventures there! Not all are good, but it worth a look
