Incoporating/Adapting Candlekeep Mysteries to Ravenloft

Post by Mephisto of the FoS »

I have some thoughts on how to use the adventures found in Candlekeep Mysteries for Ravenloft.
A DM can substitute Candlekeep which is placed in Forgotten Realms with any of the various Ravenloft universities, or maybe each adventure could be placed in a different university or other place of knowledge like a monastery. Below I am giving some of those I have in mind.

Universities
Brautslava Institute in Darkon
The Great University of Tvashti‎ in Tvashti (Sri Raji)
University of Blessed Zhakata in Zhukar (G'Henna)
University of Dementlieu in Port-a-Lucine (Dementlieu)
University of Il Aluk in Il Aluk (Darkon prior to the Grim Harvest)
University of Il Aluk in Il Aluk (Necropolis)
University of Il Aluk in Exile in Karg (Darkon)
College of Liffe in Armeikos (Liffe)
University of Richemulot in Pont-a-Museau (Richemulot)
Collegiate Caelistis in Sidnar (Darkon)
La Maison des Cent Papillons in Mortigny (Richemulot)
University of Kantora, in Kantora (Nova Vaasa)
University of Lepidstadt in Ustalav (Ustalav)
University of Mordent in Mordenshire (Mordent)

Monasteries
Monsteries found in the House of the Sages (Richemulot)
Forenoon Abbey in the Pantasmal Forest (Shadowlands)
Monastery in Markovia (Markovia)
Monastery of Silver Threads in Mount Baratak (Barovia)
Monastery of the Veil on the Hungry Mountains (Ustalav)
Monastery of the White Sun on the Luna River (Barovia)
The Abbey of Saint Markovia (Barovia)
The Golden Palace in Lechberg (ex-Dorvinia, Borca)
The Monastery of the Quickening Thunderbolt on the Sleeping Beast Mountains (Lamordia)
The Navigator's Bliss in Port-a-Lucine (Dementlieu)

Libraries
Library of Castle Avernus (Darkon)
Library of Bartakass' Manor 17 miles east of Maykle (Darkon)
Library of Dark Keep (ex-Gundarak, Barovia)
The Foucault Musical Library in Karg (Darkon)
Grande Bibliothéque in Port-a-Lucine (Dementlieu)
Kellee Library (Tepest)
The Music Library of the Bards' Guild in Martira Bay (Darkon)
The library in the House of Bones (G'Henna)
Library of Mal-Erek (Sithicus)
Library of the Mists (Pocket Domain)
Teodorus Archives in Immol (Barovia)
L’Académie des Sciences in Port-a-Lucine (Dementlieu)
The Hidden Library of Club l’Artiste in Port-a-Lucine (Dementlieu)
Zherisian National Library in Paridon (Zherisia)
Zhukar Library of Enlightenment in Zhukar (G'Henna)
Radiant Tower in Lekar (Falkovnia)

And here are some of my suggestions for Candlekeep Mysteries adventures adaptations

The Joy of Extradimentional Spaces
(anywhere)
Mazzfroth's Mighty Digressions
Farelle a rival faction to the domains darklord
"Lost book merchants" in Har'Akir
Jackalweres on Paridon Zherisia
Kantora "merchants" or Prince Othmar's goons in Nova Vaasa, rivals to Malken.

Book of the Raven
A way for outlanders to enter Ravenloft following the map they enter a one way portal to the Land of Mists.

A Deep and Creeping Darkness
This adventure could be placed in any domain bordering the Shadow Rift

Shemshime's Bedtime Rhyme
Mordent or any other domain of CL 8 or greater.

The Price of Beauty
Could be set in Tepest or Darkon maybe even Sithicus

Sarah of Yellowcrest Manor
Could be set in Nova Vaasa or Hazlan or could have been set in Dementlieu helping Alanik Ray to investigate.

Lore of Lurue
Could be placed in Tepest, Nova Vaasa and Falkovnia substituting the Corrupted Avatar of Lurue with a Shadow Unicorn and lowering the adventure level or it could be set in the Phantasmal Forest and the PC's confront Addar.

Xanthoria
This adventure could be set in Falkovnia where the PC's confront the Green Maiden instead of the powerful lich Xanthoria.

The Book of Inner Alchemy
Set in Sri Raji replacing the characters with Hindu origin names, Rokushima Táiyoo the new I'Cath or the the Brotherhood of Contemplative Power in Barovia.

The Canopic Being
Could be set in G'Henna

The Scrivener's Tale
Could be set in the Shadow Rift or any domain bordering that dark domain.

Other books that can be found in one of the libraries of the Demiplane of Dread are The Prince of Twilight, Tome of Terror, any book belonging to Falkovnian wizard Antirius the Red later known as Crimson Arcanus and a possible adventure with Marcos Vedarrak as well as others.

Do you have any suggestions?

The Amber Temple in Barovia also has a gigantic library within it. One might also be able to find the Tome of Strahd or one of Azalin's journals somewhere, depending on the way the DM works the quest together.

Yes it might but I personally won't use the Amber Temple in my campaigns, I don't like the idea of a birthplace for the Dark Powers. I prefer to have the Dark Powers more ambiguous and I don't follow any 5e implementation on Ravenloft (still haven't bought/read VRGtRavenloft) .

I'd go with Port-a-Lucine's Grande Bibliothéque.

But, really, the books are just a framing device. You can just have a book found in a private collection and launch into most of the adventures. The goofier ones won't fit, but several of the adventures are nice and creepy.

A Deep and Creeping Darkness, Shemshime’s Bedtime Rhyme, The Price of Beauty, and even The Curious Tale of Wisteria Vale could work. (With the latter being a pocket domain.)

I was always intrigued by the University of Il Aluk (pre-GC) but also post-Requiem but yes Port-a-Lucine's Grande Bibliothéque is a safer place to be...

Are you looking just for books that exist in the setting? (I'm not familiar with Candlekeep Mysteries yet. Does it involve jumping inside books or something?) If so, don't forget the The Dead Travel Fast series. ;)

Here's a good start for a search for more:

Perfectly fine to not use the Amber Temple. Though for whatever it's worth, it does have a number of signed copies of Snow Dwarf and the Seven Wights, by Nitch Rackmay (anagram of Tracy Hickman). So technically that's another book known to the domains.
