Some Question From a newb DM!
Some Question From a newb DM!
Hi all, i have some question for you, experienced masters!!! We play in Invidia (Actually in Invidia's Capital, Karina)
First of all i want to say that the problem is me, not my player, it's just my fault because i dont know how to react to some situation, or which choice to make.
General question:
1. How could i "punish" (to teach) a player who actually act as an outlaw (attack guards, intimidate people, react violently) in my campaign? I dont want to kill his PC but i need to know how to make him (Warrior Orog, he plays like a barbarian[that i find quite decent in terms of roleplay]) understand the strenght of law, guards, and what happens if he breaks the law.
Ravenloft Questions:
1. What would be the reaction of Invidians on the above mentioned character (orog [underdark orc])? how should i describe their behaviour? What about a masked elf/man who never remove his mask? and what about a man with a crow-like dress and mask(see Eileen the crow from bloodborne, to give you an idea about how he looks)?
2. What would be the reaction of commoners if they see a mage cast a spell in the center of the city? would they try to hang him? how should I proceed if this kind of things happens?
3. What should be the proper punishment(legally speaking, in front of a judge) for a necromancer caught on casting a necromantic spell? and when this "necromantic spell" can be considered clearly necromantic? ofc if he raise dead it will be clear, but what if he just land a curse, or maybe just a ray of enfeeblement?
thanks in advance

Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
You don't punish players. You pull the player aside and explain the most likely consequences for his actions, then if he continues those consequences come to fruition. How could i "punish" (to teach) a player
Fear, disgust, hate. In smaller villages he might be accused of being a demon or blamed for a local miscarriage or disappearance. What would be the reaction of Invidians on the above mentioned character (orog [underdark orc])? how should i describe their behaviour?
They'd either assume he's disfigured or possibly leprous. What about a masked elf/man who never remove his mask?
Probably assumed to be a madman/religious fanatic form Barovia, since their high regard for crows/ravens would be somewhat well-known.and what about a man with a crow-like dress and mask(see Eileen the crow from bloodborne, to give you an idea about how he looks)?
Flee, wait a little bit, then either attack or apprehend the mage while he's indisposed. If there's a priest in the city then the mage would probably be interrogated first to determine if he's a witch/warlock.2. What would be the reaction of commoners if they see a mage cast a spell in the center of the city? would they try to hang him? how should I proceed if this kind of things happens?
Most people can't recognize spells unless they've been hit with them before. Unless there's clear evidence that points to the necromancer animating or planning to animate (i.e. unearthing bodies) then it seems like the most punishment is a fine and a stern warning.3.

Thanks for the answers! but i must say i'm not agreed with you about punishment, mainly because i did not explain myself with proper wordsBuzzclaw wrote:You don't punish players. He's not a new player, so he know what he's doing, and he is doing it because he's roleplaying his Orc (a chaotic neutral and brute character, not stupid. ofc he do not attack anyone randomly, but often he react to others [NPC/PC] with force even if he could've overcome the "challenge" by speaking), and as I stated at the beginning my problem is not the players, problem it's me, because i dont know exactly how should I perform when this kind of situation occurs. My question probably wasnt clear, what i meant was "what's the most proper consequence for his action and how should i react to him when he attacks for foolish reasons, intimidate merchant and commoners, etc" (some example are enough to give me an idea.) (When this happens is not a bad things, indeed those are good and funny moments at table, fact is I dont know how to handle them and i think that sometimes I ruin the moment... )
Let's say, for example: a guard approach and start asking question to this strange creature (orcs are unknown in ravenloft) and when he (the orc) feels cornered, he reacts violently. in this case what should i do as consequence? a bounty would be set on his head, he would be hunted down, guards will organize a ploton to find him? and what if he got caught and prisoned? how do you deal with imprisonment?
On reactions (all the ones above) can i ask you how would you describe them ? some (short) example? (let's say the orog/elf/crow-like is walkin his way through the town to meet the rest of the party, and commoners will notice them, how would you/should i describe their reaction and in general the scene?)
thanks in advance!

Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
Am I right in reading that the character has the problem with law and order and not the player? As a barbarian-esque character, is it that he is rebelling against authority, or doesn't understand or acknowledge the concept? If the latter I would start with a simple aspect of ravenloftian justice, don't mess with the vistani! the vistani seem like easy enough targets for intimidation but come with a sting, which may make him think twice about throwing his weight around, you don't even need to go the whole hog and curse him, I once had a raunie sentence the entire party to death, only to appoint a local monster as the executioner, with the threat of a curse should they not face themNox wrote: General question:

I'm sorry i don't understand the last phrase, what you mean when you say that "she senteced them to death, only to appoint a local monster as the executioner"? why would the monster accomplish his task? and what does it has to do with the curses if i dont actually curse him(you said dont need to do it, right?)?

Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
My fault, I should have been clearer, she told the group that they must face a specific local monster or face a terrible curse, if they defeated the monster their debt to the vistani would be considered cleared, if the monster defeated them then the sentence of death would be considered fulfilled. The point being sometimes the threat of a curse can be enough to point characters in the right direction.Nox wrote:yes, problem is the character, not the player.thekristhomas wrote:Am I right in reading that the character has the problem with law and order and not the player? Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
An obvious consequence would be the arrival of more guards, Karina is not a huge town so most of the watch could mobilize pretty quickly, add to that some Talons garrisoned at the trading enclave and it might not get as far as a posse.Nox wrote:Thanks for the answers! but i must say i'm not agreed with you about punishment, mainly because i did not explain myself with proper wordsBuzzclaw wrote:You don't punish players. I didn't mean to Punish the player, sorry, i meant to punish the character(maybe punish ain't the right word for this though..). Another possibility is an approach offering employment. Bullies, thugs and mercs are always in demand, and there are plenty who could overlook his face for his fists. In Karina there are IIRC the Lord's Men and the gangs involved with the dog fights, even the Talons might be willing to deal with an untermensch, unofficially at least.
I think imprisonment can make for good roleplaying and good adventure hooks. the plot of FoG starts with an imprisonment, with the PCs locked in with a werewolf. In Karina another possibility for punishment is the dog fights, with the player being thrown into a pit of werewolves.
I imagine that most locals would think that the orog was something like a caliban, and respond accordingly. Elves are native to Sithicus, a neighbouring realm, but the mask would draw suspicion (remember, facial deformities might be signs of a failed power check) The crow guy might be mistaken for a physician (I'm thinking of the masks plague doctors used to wear) and be swamped by people seeking cures. I don't know which system you're using, but I like Outcast Rating system from 3e, even if you don't use it the numbers can give you a fair idea of how "cosmopolitan" the locals are.

Depends on the time of year. If it's Festival time in Karina (and really, isn't it always Festival time when PCs show up?thekristhomas wrote:[ but the mask would draw suspicion (remember, facial deformities might be signs of a failed power check) The crow guy might be mistaken for a physician (I'm thinking of the masks plague doctors used to wear) and be swamped by people seeking cures.

good point, same goes for the crow guy now that you mention itGonzoron of the FoS wrote:Depends on the time of year. Eh indeed it's festival time! Where van I read some about dog fights?evil eye?
Anyway thanks all for advices, I will make good use of them!
Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
If the character is acting a certain way, a power check may be called for or outcast rating may be increased. Since the group is in Karina he may attract the attention of the midnight assassin if you have the adventure that takes place that could help. Another thing is there active thieves guild which may not take to kindly to this ran by Regess. Also since he's half orc the group may encounter Falkovians which have a trade colony in Karina. They may ship him back as a gladiator or to stake since hes an orc not a caliban.

Sorry for misunderstanding you. Thanks for the answers! but i must say i'm not agreed with you about punishment, mainly because i did not explain myself with proper words![]()
Orog: Hisses, curses, half-muttered prayers, signs to ward off evil, parting of crowdsOn reactions (all the ones above) can i ask you how would you describe them ? some (short) example? Elf: Half-muttered prayers, signs to ward off evil, parting of crowds, cries of "Unclean!", possible racism ("Go back to Slithicus!", etc.)
Crow-like: Curiousity, inquiries.

Yeah, The Evil Eye is your major source for the Festival, and for Karina in general. Highly, Highly recommended. one of the best products in the 2e Ravenloft line, IMHO.Nox wrote:Eh indeed it's festival time! Where van I read some about dog fights?evil eye?

Re: Some Question From a newb DM!
Keep in mind that although the general population might not know about specific spells being cast, the Land does. At least in 2nd edition, most necromancy/necromantic spell were altered by the Land (usually working better) and the vast majority lead to a Power Check (which you want to avoid like the Plague). So in this case the Demiplane itself will slowly teach him a lesson.Nox wrote:[snip]
