Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Good idea right! XD
Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Yesterday I took three friends in their twenties to krav. They gave us a hard workout but it was fun.
Today, all the young folks are complaining of aches and pains. I feel fine.

Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Youth is wasted on the young. So they have to deal with some mild aches and pains. Big deal. I'll be impressed when they can pass a stone (gall or kidney, both hurt so much death would be welcome) and say, "I feel pretty good" when it's over.HuManBing wrote:Yesterday I took three friends in their twenties to krav. Krav? As in krav maga? The Israeli Defense Force martial arts?

Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Yep, krav maga as in the no-frills, straightforward-brutal, get-yourself-a-handful-of-your-assailant's-crotch-and-twist Israeli martial art self defense technique. It's very similar to the pared-down brutal martial arts used by military programs in the US (MCMAP, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) and in the PRC (散打/散手, sanda/sanshou). I've never done MCMAP myself but I did several years of sanda when I was in Beijing.
I've started taking Nadia and Alcibiades, two of my Ravenloft campaign players, there and they love it. Last week we also took a very fit athlete friend and even he complained of aches and pains.
I feel fine, although as a man in my early 30s I think this is more due to the fact that if I get an ache or pain, it's usually lost in the background of my usual bodily complaints.
It's weird the stuff I have to take just to be in good health. Nothing too drastic, but I'm taking supplements to improve Vitamin D absorption, to improve my sleep quality, and dietary fiber to improve my Reddit reading sessions in the bathroom. Two lovely companions spent my birthday evening with me and luckily I didn't have to take any supplement for that. (Yet.)
As an aside, make sure you read the box label before you take anything. It's an old joke but true: Lunesta will help you fall asleep, but Levitra will not. If anything it'll keep you up all night.

Overly concerned parents:
I met ExGirlfriend over drinks again. We don't hang out as much as we used to, for the highly selfish reason that she has finally gotten her love life back together with a fairly decent guy and so it's not particularly consoling for me to hear her vent about her numerous dating problems as it used to be in the past.
She works as a broadcast reporter for an international TV channel and her face has become a common sight on the airwaves of a certain southeast Asian country for the past decade or so.
Well, recently ExG got a promotion at work and now she spends much less time in front of the camera and much more time managing other reporters.
I got a phone call from a number in her country and a voice speaking accented English left a voicemail asking if I knew where she was and whether she was okay and in fact whether the terrorists had bombed her.
I was very confused but ExG cleared it up. Apparently her family back at home had become so used to seeing her on TV that they assumed as long as she was on the airwaves, everything was okay. Once she got promoted, they stopped seeing her. Because her cell phone had changed several times, they couldn't contact her.
They had gotten so desperate that they even called me - an old boyfriend who broke up with her seven years previously - for information about their missing daughter.
"Why didn't they just email you?" I asked.
"They probably did," ExG responded. "I never read their emails."
"Why not?" I asked.
"Look, they called up all my friends and exes just because I wasn't on TV for a few days, does this look like somebody I'd WANT to email?"
She had a minor point but I still think she should have been more appreciative.

Addendum:
ExG: oh yeah, you remember how when we were dating, we were always careful to make sure they didn't know I was living with an atheist?
Me: oh sure. Three years of masterful subterfuge all right.
ExG: yeah, well don't pat yourself on the back just yet. Turns out my coworker was actually my dad's college friend, so he was passing office gossip straight back to my parents the whole time.
Me: what! So they knew about...-
ExG: everything dear. The fights, the pregnancy scares, the trip to see your parents in China. Everything.
Me (with difficulty): what about the true function of the "neck massager" your dad took home with him?
ExG: oh, that's a good question. I actually don't know. Want me to ask him?
Me: no.

Yeah that thing is going to follow me around for the rest of my life, haunting me like a menacing yet strangely festive ghost.

Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Yeah, stupid ducktor (read: a quack) skipped an ultrasound and just decided to go for the colonoscopy (not fun preparing for!). He diagnoses it IBS when it's a gallstone and six months later I'm back at a new doctor for the same pain; I had to be rushed into emergency surgery when he actually took the missing step. My whole gall bladder had to be removed or I'd have died. That's the second time a sloppy doctor has nearly gotten me killed by taking half-measures. I now study what should be done before I see a doctor about anything based on symptoms.Zilfer wrote:^if so that's interesting....!!!!

Actual krav maga? They teach that publicly? Why not just go for Japanese budo? Teach folks how to seriously injure, even kill, with their bare hands? Not that you need training to do it. Press the carotid hard enough for long enough (thirty seconds or so) and a person will die due to oxygen depravation to the brain. Not that I've studied such things in detail. <.< >.>

Re: Real life fear/horror/madness
Woah, that's a putrid performance by a doctor if ever I heard of one! Sorry you had to go through that, High Priest Mikhal, but I'm glad you survived it. My first girlfriend, Gumdrop, had a gall bladder blockage that went misdiagnosed by the British doctors and it turned into liver cancer with fatal consequences. One thing I learned is if there's any doubt about the gall bladder you can't rely on generalists - specialize that bugger to the hilt.
Krav is just the discipline I go for when there's a fistfight imminent. If I'm jumped or tackled, I use BJJ, and I'm seriously looking into parkour for ease of escape practice, which I consider even more effective and low-cost than striking or grappling distance martial arts.
If they can't catch you, they can't hurt you!

My technique for escaping fights is to stay home on the couch. It seems to work pretty well.HuManBing wrote:Krav is just the discipline I go for when there's a fistfight imminent. That's it, game's over folks. We just found the single most energy efficient self defense philosophy out there. Sit in your lair and let the buggers come to you.Gonzoron of the FoS wrote:My technique for escaping fights is to stay home on the couch. It seems to work pretty well.
In other news, Gonzoron suspected of early-onset stage one lichhood
