The Thaani?

Post by Jelloslime »

A friend of mine wishes to make a character from Barovia, and wants to know more about the Thaani people. I've got nearly every Ravenloft book under the sun, and I can't find much info on them at all. I've ctrl+f'd my way through the Kargatane PDFs to no avail, not to mention tried out the Ravenloft Wiki, and the catalog. :( Is there any more info at all to be found beyond what's provided in the Gazetteers, or should I simply make stuff up on my own? I don't mind doing so, but I've gotta say I prefer established lore to tinker with most of the time. If anyone had anything, I'd be most grateful. Strangely enough...I never use Barovia in my games, so when a player actually picked it I went into panic mode.

I think Thaani people were mentioned in Book of Sacrifices few times...

I remember a sub-people in Immol who used to live in Bleutspur but fled north to Barovia. Is that them?
If so I'd check Gaz I. I think one of the books in the second boxed set (Forbidden Lore?) had something as well, but I haven't looked in ages.

Yeah, Forbidden Lore details the Ildi'Thaan, a Thaani organization, but while this is the first source for the culture as a whole, it focused on the organization, not the culture. Book of Sacrifices has a fan version of the God Brain's backstory, which includes one take on the origins of the Thaani, but it's not official.

They really haven't been explored much, so have at it! :)

Gaz I has the naming conventions and character creation stuff if memory serves correctly. The Ravenloft DMG also notes what Psionic Classes and Prestige kits are available to the Thanni from the Psionics rules.

What is the Ildi'Thaan?

Oo! Nearly forgot about those!

They're a secret society from Forbidden Lore - Based in Immol if memory serves correct - who were focussed on either stealing power from or evading the Illithid of Bluetspur.

Another thought - Bonespur the Mercenary was a Psi if memory serves; and I believe his death is referanced in Gaz I as well I believe? There was mention of a bar where his mercenaries and his replacement drink and wait for offers. Pretty certain that was Immol, and that they had some sort of connection (even if only implied) to the Thaani. Will check later and confirm!

I am getting old... The Thaani naming conventions and character creation are in 'The Barovian Hero' sidebar in Gaz1, but the Bonedaggers and their leader Loie Hunn are based out of 'The Sorcerer's Head' Inn in Toayalis in Hazlan (also covered in Gaz I!).

Both Toyalis and Immol bordered Bluetspur before the GC, and as such both had Thanni refugees. I'm pretty certain that Forbidden Lore situated the Ildi'Thaan mainly in Immol, but with operatives in Hazlan as well.
