hidajiremi wrote:In my campaign, I had a rather spectacular "great fire" ravage Pont-a-Museau as part of a plot by a mad aristocrat to eradicate the wererats of the domain by burning them out of their holes. He basically stopped up as many of the sewer gas venting pipes as he could and let a good pocket of methane build up in the top couple of levels of the sewers, hired an alchemist to produce hundreds of gallons of kerosene, bought up warehouses scattered across the city to store the stuff, sabotaged as many of the city's water towers and reservoirs as he could, and set it all ablaze at the height of the biggest festival of the summer, while the river was at its lowest. The PCs had been following these breadcrumbs around for the better part of two sessions when the fireworks hit, and spent the next one scrambling around the city to do damage control, save friendly NPCs, and find the crazy bastard that had set it all off. Then they had to fight him at the top of a bell tower at the height of a lightning storm while Louise Renier was tied to the bell, which was set to ring (and then break free from its moorings and fall) at the stroke of midnight. Adventure was epic. :D

You know, somewhere in all this is a Quoth the Raven article waiting to happen. Firefighting as portrayed by domain location.
I'm just a ghost in this house.

I had a Great Fire article in development for 7th Sea for a magazine that never got to issue 1 I'll have a dig around see if I've still got it. Some of it might be adaptable to Ravenloft.

By Permission of Heaven: The Story of the Great Fire of London is a great read about all sorts of things to do with a city wide fire.

Just checked and I did finish the 7th Sea article on fire. Its 6000 words long of which about 2500 is an easilly changed academic paper discussing fire in 7th Sea that should be immediately adaptable to Ravenloft. I'll try and get a Ravenloft version of that up on my website by the weekend. The rest is a mixture of crunch about fire and fire fighting (which will take a bit of converting) to d20 but goes well past what's in the SRD - I'll try to convert that when I have time.

I'd say that this is a possibility, at least in a few advanced domains.
The Renaissance domains have syringes, portable blood-transfusion pumps, and primitive flamethrowers. Why wouldn't they have firefighting wagons in those cities that can afford such things?

There is a monster in the Monster Compendium ... III I think (this is 2nd, as I don't know if it was converted to 3.x) that is a Hearth Fiend, an evil outsider fire elemental. I have plans to at some point write up a homebrew adventure set in Vorostokov or Valachan (haven't decided), though it could be anywhere really, that involved an inn that had to deal with this creature, as it had its telepathic grips on the innkeeper and was forcing him to start doing worse and worse things. Make it seem like a murder mystery, you know "Who killed the traveling gypsy" or something, and as the PCs try to figure out based on the guests, the fire continues to grow in power. It would end in an enormous conflagration.

Flamethrowers?

Do you mean an East Roman type syphon that sprays Greek Fire? In the real world, that dates back centuries prior to the Renniasance.

I meant the "dragon-pack" handheld sprayers from Van Richten's Arsenal. They can be used to spray flammable oil, holy water, allergens in liquid form, or whatever other fluids might solve the problem at hand.

Sounds rather fun. I don't have that book.

I wouldn't call it a 'dragon-pack' though. That just doesn't sound right to me. It's a hand pump or syphon.

Ah, yes. I had previously mentioned the East Romans and their little syphon trick. :azalin:

Manofevil wrote:The great fire of Rome. The great fire of London. The great fire of Chicago. The great fire of Boston. There is a long history of great conflagrations in our society destroying vast parts of some our greater cities. Yet in 400 years of RavenLoft, not one city has been even partially destroyed by fire.
Didn't Vallaki get burned down when the Kargatane left?

It's obviously not canon, but since it's Kargatan-ish, and since Dion wrote that excellent adventure "The Nine of Hearts" about it, I always had it as a historical fact in my campaign. :)

I've posted the first part of Ravenloft Ablaze on my website and I'd love to hear what you think of it. I've got some d20 crunch to follow but I didn't want to get too lost in that and never get round to posting this.

Meh, for 9000gp you can eliminate the need for storage tanks. I still say a decanter of endless water should be found in most large cities.

That depends, of course, on how commonplace magic is in your setting. IMC, such an item would be quite unusual, even in a big city. I tend to tamp down on magic inflation.
