There wasn't a new message.
So, whoever wrote it - I didn't get it and I hope it wasn't anything too importaint, like a cancer cure, or winning lottery numbers...

I'm suspecting it was a spambot we recently deleted, and when the user was deleted, all its unread messages went with it.

(This would also explain the flood of email bounce messages I received at the same time. Lots of people haven't updated their email addresses, but the board never noticed until it tried to send a mass mailing to everyone who got one of these phantom PMs...)
