Music in Ravenloft

The opening music I always use for my current campaign is the first disk of NIN's Ghosts. Other stuff I've been sucessful with in the past is Rammstein - lots of grand, industrial snarling. I'll use it for this game when the PCs are higher-level.

I just went through my old Delerium collection, and the song Embodying (from Syrophenikan) is now the theme music for Timor.

Just wanted to add that several pieces of music by Apocalyptica seems to fit the tone and mood I see for a Ravenloft campaign. Especially Faraway and Farewell.

I used Faraway as the "love theme" for two of my NPCs. I've also used Path, Coma, Beyond Time, Domination, Conclusion, and even their covers of Nothing Else Matters and One snuck in once each.

No worries. I just couldn't believe I or someone else hadn't mentioned them already, so I searched.

I'm a pretty huge fan, ever since stumbling on their 1st album (the metallica cover album) in a used CD store over 10 years ago, I've picked up every album, and enjoyed watching them grow and change from a gimmick to something truly unique.

I never thought to use music in my campaigns, although handy mp3 format was only just becoming popular last time I DMed on a regular basis. Ahh mix-tapes, you will be missed! My players were easily distracted (never what you would call "serious" gamers, and most of my sessions dealt with them casting spells to levitate summoned animals onto church steeples and stuff like that.) but I can see the value of it if used properly.

Would you play a song int eh background, maybe on repeat, while certain battles or other encounters were going on, or even independent of encounters? How about actually making the players listen to a "mood piece" while you organize other aspects of the game?

yup, pretty much. I try to have a playlist of 3-7 songs for each major location in the adventure, and sometimes a single song for an appropriate character or moment.

Well for a mis-labeled mp3 that Zelda song is what got me listening to Apocalyptica. The Metallica came later for me. Through all my hard rock and alternative, I have to say there is something about stringed instruments that still gets me! They are indeed excellent and I can see a million uses for them in a campaign or just in my car.

I had no clue the Metallica cover was their first album. Amazing!

Up until about a year and a half ago, I never even knew they existed. Then a friend of mine asked me to listen to I Don't Care, and I was sold. Especially after hearing the two I mentioned above, Faraway and Farewell. One of their newer pieces of music featuring Gavin Rossdale which is called End of Me is really great too. Even my father enjoys their sound. They're really a great group, and I encourage others to try them out if they're wanting to experience true art in music, mixed with the nature of symphonic bliss.
