Rayne Gryphon[1] was born an albino in Tepest. His disfigurement marked him as affected by unnatural influence and therefore turned him into an outcast. His parents eventually paid some Vistani to take him away, and they left him in Darkon, selling him as a slave. Passing from hand to hand, he eventually wound up with Captain Peck, a sailor the Nocturnal Sea. Peck eventually traveled to Paridon sold him to Dr. Carrodine, an alchemist and pharmacist whom took an intersting in Rayne's albinism.

Dr. Carrodine performed painful experiments on Rayne, determined to find him a cure. The doctor succeeded, partially. Rayne was able to have a ruddy complexion during the day, but at night he became invisible. Rayne became violent and unpredictable as his years of repressed rage came to the forefront of his consciousness. Dr. Carrodine asserted to him that he would help find a way to complete the transformation and rid Rayne of his invisibility. Rayne later discovered that Dr. Carrodine only intended to undo the effects of the albinism cure all together. This caused them to come to blows. The resulting fight set the laboratory ablaze. Rayne abandoned the doctor to his fate.

Since that time, Rayne has engineered a new life in the social spotlight, funding his life of extravagance with theft and extortion. His lifetime of abuse followed by the sudden psychological trauma of his transformation has left him paranoid and uninhibited, not the chemicals he was treated with.
