Narmu-Shurpak is the darklord, master, and rider of Dur-Anea. On some some unknown then-young world, Narmu-Shurpak was one of the annunaki, a race of outsiders that were created to serve the deities. Narmu-Shurpak's task in overseeing this new world was monitoring the great leviathans of the sea: whales, massively giant turtle, and similar creatures. He did so with gusto, and managed to form an empathic bond with a great giant sea turtle name Dur-Anea. However, there eventually came a time where the gods decreed that the time for the great giant sea beasts had passed. It was time for them to pass away. By this time, Dur-Anea had become wearied with age, and it was ready to accept death with grace. It was unfortunate that Narmu-Shurpak could not accept Dur-Anea dying with grace.[1]

Narmu-Shurpak defied the wills of his creators by stealing a Flame of Immortality. However, in the act of the theft, Narmu-Shurpak caused a great accident that disrupted the forces of creation. This disruption caused a series of chain reactions that stripped his home world of all life. All life save for Narmu-Shurpak and Dur-Anea, whom Narmu had bathed in the light of the Flame of Immortality. Dur-Anea deeply regretted the denial of eternal rest after centuries of tiring life and cried for his loss. Although the horrors Narmu-Shurpak had caused were accidental, he celebrated the triumph he had achieved by stealing immortality from the gods.[2]

For eons the two of them searched fruitlessly for life on the now barren world but found none. Eventually, Narmu-Shurpak's desolate world was visited by a spelljamming ship. Dur-Anea called to the inhabitants of the ship for help. The ship crew panicked, and Narum-Shurpak's paranoia got the better of him. Believing them to be agents of the gods sent to wreak their vengeance, Narmu-Shurpak massacred the ship's inhabitants down to the last man. With this final act of betrayal, Narmu-Shurpak and Dur-Anea were drawn into the Mists as darklord and domain respectively.[2]

Dur-Anea now wanders the seas of Ravenloft under the command of Narm-Shurpak, wanting nothing more than to pass away but unable to due to its enthrallment. Paranoia consumes Narmu-Shurpak, who believes any person they meet could be an agent of the gods sent to inflict their wrath upon him.[2]
