Lady Kazandra

Lady Kazandra is a nonplayer character and villain first mentioned in the 2nd Edition Ravenloft campaign setting product Domains of Dread and later fully profiled in the Third Edition sourcebook Ravenloft Gazetteer II. She was to appear in a module for the first time in Death Undaunted, but that product never made a complete or official release. In universe, she is the vampire leader of the Kargat and the Kargatane and resides within Martira Bay in Darkon.[1]

History

Born of peasant stock in the town of Maykle in 645 BC, Lady Kazandra somehow earned her way into Darkon's secret police force and was eventually awarded transformation into a vampire for her dedication and devotion to the cause. Kazandra took on a variety of operations throughout Darkon before being called to work in Martira Bay in the year of 744 BC.[2]

The Kargat called Kazandra to Martira Bay to use her as a tool for gaining control over the local criminal underworld. Tavelia, the Kargat leader at the time, wanted to keep her own hands squeaky clean as second-in-charge of the Faith of the Overseer. Unfortunately for Tavelia, Kazandra proved an able manipulator in her own right, setting up the influential Cosmopolis Club and subverting the local Kargatane as her own personal minions and pawns during the Grim Harvest.[3] By 751 BC, Lady Kazandra had the Kargatane effectively wrapped around her little finger, as they obeyed her in Azalin's absence.[4] In response to Kazandra's potential threat to her power, Tavelia commanded Kazandra to assassinate the meddling detective Alanik Ray. The assassination plot failed, but Alanik Ray became spooked enough to flee the domain. For her part, Lady Kazandra's eye was maimed and healed back with a peculiar disfigurement, one that she keeps covered to this day.[3]

Following Tavelia's botched conspiracy to enslave Azalin Rex as he returned to corporeal form in 755 BC, Tavelia disappeared. Azalin appointed Kazandra as her successor as the leader of Kargat activity in western Darkon and (in official rank at least) of the entire organization. (This promotion has alienated many other Kargat officers and leaders, including Venrith Chole, the leader of the northeastern Darkonian Kargat branch, who jealously resents the promotion of an upstart.[1]) For her part, Tavelia's betrayal took Kazandra completely off guard, but once Kazandra learned of it, her help was important in aiding Azalin's agents to restore him to power.[5]

Current Sketch

Lady Kazandra rules the Kargat more on paper than in actuality, though her Kargatane and the Kargat of Martira Bay look at her with special reverence sometimes approaching worship. Yet the Kargat of the other branches, including Venrith Chole and Beryl Silvertress of Karg, don't look upon Kazandra with such friendliness or trust. Kazandra lets them indulge in their little power games for now, but she ultimately seeks to bring all of the Kargat under one banner and will destroy the other branches if need be. In the meantime, she remains an influential and powerful social figure in Martira Bay, both as proprietor of the Cosmopolis Club, the headquarters of her operations, and as Kargat leader.[5]
