Imrissa is an NPC from the Dragon Magazine Article Domain of Dread: Monadhan, The Traitor's Hold. She is an important figure in the past, present punishment, and perhaps future of the darklord of Monadhan, Arantor. was the daughter and student of Arantor. In the Points of Light implied setting of 4th Edition, Arantor and Imrissa championed the nation of Arkhosia in the war against Bael Turath. To conceal a horrible crime, Arantor committed the ultimate betrayal, murdering Imrissa.[1]

Background

Upon orders from their superiors, father and daughter swept what they thought was a remote military encampment hidden deep in the jungle. Arantor and Imrissa made their first strike before discovering the horrific truth: the outpost was no military facility but instead a refugee camp. Imrissa declared they should report it, but Arantor only wanted to conceal the truth. Angered by Imrissa's disgust at his cowardice, Arantor struck her down in a fit of rage. Horrified at his sins, Arantor destroyed the entire refugee camp to conceal his wrongdoing.[1]

Eons later, an aged Arantor looked forward for death to claim his soul from his imprisonment in the Shadowfelf domain of Monadhan. However, death offered no escape, but instead a horrible undeath. As his rotting form became skeletal, he found it was Imrissa's heart, rather than his own, beating within his chest. The corrupted heart began whispering the numerous and many identities of those Arantor had wrongfully killed. It would never stop.[2]

Current Sketch

Imrissa exists on, as an undead remnant of some sort or another.

Several details in Domain of Dread: Monadhan, The Traitor's Hold contradict each other regarding Imrissa's exact fate. Her spirit is said to lie at the bottom of the Pit in eternal slumber. According to the article, awakening her is an important part of the final and ultimate defeat of Arantor: the acknowledgement of his guilt with the destruction of the Heart of Darkness.[3] On the other hand, the Heart of Darkness is said to be her heart elsewhere in the article.[4] This Dark Heart exerts some kind of fell influence upon Arantor and gives him extra power.[5] In Arantor's combat information, the Heart (labeled as "Imrissa") receives its own separate initiative. After Arantor's hit point total drops to zero, his form splits apart, and Imrissa emerges as another foe to be beaten.[6]
