Gustav Malvoni[1] (born 664 BC and presumed deceased in 754 BC), also known as the Mad Clockmaker, was a craftsman of many talents (most notably Clockmaking) and of the highest skill. Yet, as he aged, he found he lacked a greater legacy to give to the world: that of a son. Returning, as always, to what he knew, Gustav built a dread mechanical golem. He named it Talos, but the dread golem eventually rebelled and started call itself Vir Stannum.

Two events soured relations between the creator and his creation. First, Gustav had originally intended Talos to be able to craft machines of its own. However, the hands turned out to be unsuitable for this task. When Gustav tried to reorient it to be a storyteller, the construct became offended and thought that Gustav had failed it. Furthermore, it wanted a soul, something that Gustav could not provide. Talos did not accept this and instead believed its creator was withholding the soul.

The conflict came to a head when the two confronted each other at Gustav's Old Laboratory in Darkon overlooking the Shadow Rift. Gustav gave his creation a "soul engine", which was really a bomb. The bomb damaged Vir Stannum, but Gustav still got in a tussle with it. The ensuing fight knocked the dread mechanical golem into the Shadow Rift. Gustav believed his construct destroyed, but it was not.

The existence or nonexistence of Vir Stannum would hardly matter for Gustav because he was later seemingly murdered by intruders who had entered his house. By the time Vir Stannum escaped from the Shadow Rift, he found that Gustav was already dead.
