Grave Scarab Beetles is a kind of flesh-eating scarab beetle known to exist in the Land of Mists.[1][2][3] Each only about 3 inches long[1], they are much smaller than their cousins, the giant scarab beetle and the monstrous scarab beetle. Ironically, grave scarab beetles are much more aggressive; active grave scarabs will attack any notable living targets en masse. However, they are normally scavengers, feeding upon dead organic material.[1][2][3], burrowing through the skin and, once inside the body, eating their way to the heart to kill their prey.[2][3] Thankfully, they usually appear only in deserts, underground, and in tombs.[1][2][3]

When food is readily available, their carapaces are a shiny blue-black in color. In cases where food is nill, grave scarabs will devour each other until one or two are left, assuming a golden color as their bodily functions slow down dramatically. A dormant scarab beetle can easily be mistaken for jewelry. A dormant grave scarab beetle awakens when it touches warm flesh.[2][3]

Of the known domains, grave scarab beetles are native to Har'Akir.[4] They can be found in Anhktepot's Tomb.[5]

Strangely enough, scarab beetles can also be encountered in Avonleigh.[6]

Note

Although the 2nd Edition monster entry gave the grave scarab beetle game statistics for them as swarms[1], the 3rd Edition monster entry in the Ravenloft monster books Denizens of Darkness and Denizens of Dread list each only as singular entities rather than a swarm.[2][3] However, the generic D&D 3rd Edition sourcebook Fiend Folio has an entry for general flesh-eating scarab beetle swarms that could probably be used for a swarm of grave scarabs.
