In I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin

According to Strahd's narrative, General Vychen was the main military leader for the offenses against Barovia, with five other generals serving beneath him, including General Tew Yssup. Strahd hired Voan Darl and his group of mercenaries to kidnap Vychen. In his narrative, Strahd describes how he possessed Darl using a combination of different magics in order to lead the attack. Nanje was used as as bait to lure Vychen into a vulnerable position, from which the rest of Darl's group attacked in ambush. Vychen was captured and brought back to Barovia, where he was similarly taken over by Strahd.

So dominated, Vychen became Strahd's puppet to lure the other Kargat leaders into an ambush by the Barovian military. Vychen/Strahd personally killed Tew Yssup, and the Barovians killed the other Kargat leaders. Before Vychen/Strahd could make it back over the border, Azalin exerted his control over Darkon's undead to incapacitate and drag down Vychen/Strahd. Momentarily trapped inside of Vychen's body, Strahd felt the pain of Vychen's death. Ultimately, good fortune was with Strahd as he escaped at the very last moment as Vychen turned to mist.
