Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) is an American author of many gothic horror and detective stories, including the Masque of the Red Death.[1]]] Poe has never actually met Prince Prospero, but the story's eerie resemblance to the events of Prospero's life has impressed him. By staging a masquerade ball to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Poe's death in 1899, Prospero hopes to recruit allies to destroy the ebony clock.[2]
