Appearing as beautiful human females, vehrteig are mysterious humanoids that feed upon acts of evil. Instinctively recognizing sinkholes of evil, they encourage the most vile people they find to further walk down the path of wickedness before ultimately manipulating these fools to destroy themselves in final explosions of violence[1]. Their targets do not need to be people of great or epic evil- in fact the majority of vehrteig prefer to start with folks of petty wickedness and build them into greater monsters before ending their lives[2]. When a vehrteig has sated her hunger, she usually uses her venom- via a kiss, scratch, or weapon- to drive her targets into paranoiac fits of homicidal wrath and kill each other. A vehrteig can finish off a single survivor with a special death gaze[1].
Although usually entirely evil, a vehrteig's destruction of her targets often provides an ironic boon of life or freedom to the targets' (still living) prior victims[3]. Despite this irony, the vehrteig represent an enemy to the virtuous in general and the Vistani in specific- so much so that the Vistani have proverbs of survival by avoiding conflicts with the vehrteig[4]. Vehrteig and Vistani have the intuitive ability to recognize each other by sight[3]. However, the vehrteig are otherwise immune to many of the defenses Vistani employ- curses, the evil eye, even divination and prophecy[1].
Vehrteig speak Patterna, and the majority also speak multiple domain languages. They cast spells as bards, which is also the favored class for vehrteig[3].
