The Van Schelms comprise one of the noble families of Souragne. Once highly wealthy, their fortunes have dwindled as they have given greater pay than the norm for their workers (and probably also due to the gambling habits of their patriarch- see below). Although they own a tobacco plantation, the Van Schelms collect most of their income from draining and dredging, dykebuilding, and peat-selling. The aging patriarch, Archibald Van Schelm, has become senile and consumed with grief over the lost of his wife, leaving two of his sons, Alfred Van Schelm and Balthasar Van Schelm to manage the day-to-day affairs of the plantation. Archibald's third son, Gerard Van Schelm, has traveled to Ste. Ronges in Richemulot to act as a recruiter for employees and investors.[1]

At the Le Coq Noir gambling house, Gerard accrued a large debt through gambling. As a result, he had to give consent that his granddaughter, Iolanthe Van Schelm, would become married to Guy Larouche.[1]

The Van Schelm Family owns the White Star Point Plantation.[1]
