Past & Present
The University of Il Aluk in Exile unites the living remnants of the University of Il Aluk. There were professors who had the good fortune of being outside of Il Aluk when the Requiem struck. They came together in the weeks following the disaster and decided that their institution would not die. Karg would become its new seat. Professor Abelhous Nicholsi, up until his death in 751 BC, was a chief mover in this effort. Naturally enough, defections to other institutions and the chaos into which Darkon fell, gravely threatened this project.
Had there not been an additional goal, the effort might have been abandonned within the first several years. The aim was not simply one of saving the venerable institution. The true purpose was nothing less than the retaking of Il Aluk for the living. How this might be achieved none could yet say. The answer would no doubt be long and slow in coming, emerging from a generation or more of research. Not a word of this would be stated openly. In closed committee, however, decisions would be taken and policies set always in relation to this overarching goal.
Still, failure was assured without funding. Benefactors fronting the Church of Ezra and the Syndicate of Enlightened Citizens proved to be particularly generous. It was the return of Azalin Rex, however, that secured the future of the institution. Necropolis was an embarassment to him, one that he dearly wished wiped out of existence. Although he doubted that the school itself would find any useful answers, it was asking the right questions and attracting people who might be talented enough that they would be worth plucking up and being set to work on the matter under his personal direction.
Although there is no department of necrology or planar mechanics, both being treated within the Department of Arcane Studies, worthy projects in either are readily funded. Of special interest are research proposals addressing the energy planes.
