Medications are drugs prescribed to cure or treat disease. An overdose of medicine is poisonous. The prescription and the consumption of the correct dose is essential. For any medication and indeed any substance, in sufficient quantity, can function as a poison. Foxglove, for example, is a medication that can kill. Many medications include medically undesirable side effects which make them at the same time poisons. This in fact true, at least at some level, of all medications and distinguishes them from nutriments. Medications may be and, at least at some low level, are usually addictive. The medically desirable effects and/or the medically undesirable effects of a medication may lead to its non-medical usage ritually or recreationally.
