First animated by Prince Loht or as his sith and sithkin subordinates[1], the Dearg-Due Saugh are a type of undead[1][2] created to serve in Loht's Saugh armies[1]. Though they pretended to serve Loht, the dearg-due (and all other saugh) from the beginning truly obeyed Gwydion and only served Loht's orders until their pretenses were no longer convenient for Gwydion.[1] Since the revelation of Gwydion's treachery and his maiming of Loht, the Arak have made efforts to wipe out the saugh, though to limited effect.[2]

Unlike many undead, the body of a dearg-due is not afflicted with rot, the skin relatively intact if stretched tightly over the creature's emaciated frame. A dearg-due saugh's most disturbing feature is its lack of eyes, only empty sockets left behind. Yet the dearg-due's vision is not impaired. Thus, the dearg-due saugh are obviously not among the living.[1]

Referred to by "S" as merely "axe-wielding wights"[2], dearg-due saugh are in fact a distinct type of corporeal undead. Like wights, saugh are intelligent and malevolent; they frequently employ sneaky and underhanded tactics.[1] Beyond their use of axes as weapons, dearg due are distinguished from wights by a lack of an energy drain attack but the presence of an acidic mist that erupts from their skin when struck in combat, inflicting back a portion of the damage done to the creature.[1] The dearg-due may be injured by any weapon, but they are especially vulnerable to cold iron weapons.[1]

As with the rest of the saugh, dearg-due dwell within the Shadow Rift, mostly the more arid parts of the Southern Rift[2] such as the Darkenheights.[3]
