Formed from the dark waters of the ocean depths mixed with flesh and other organic waste leaked down from above, blackskates are evil undead creatures that resemble pale manta rays comprised the above mentioned cast-off rotting matter. Blackskate is drawn to warm-blooded creatures, and the spilling of such blood sends a blackskate into a horrible frenzy. Should its prey escape its rage and poisonous stinger, a blackskate can track them anywhere in the same ocean so long as it has tasted their blood. Despite its origins and bestial nature, blackskates are quite intelligent.^[1]

Gregor Cossal: The priest... He cast the spell to allow us to find the city... So we could breath under water...

Dr. Fulviani: What city?

Gregor Cossal: That of the deep ones.

Dr. Fulviani: Go on.

Gregor Cossal: The only light we had was provided by Christina... The water was black... The floor was littered with bones of fish... Some as big as an ox... I could see, in the ink we were swimming in, something that LOOKED like a city... Then the bones raised.

Dr. Fulviani: What do you mean?

Gregor Cossal: The bones... They moved and formed a great creature... Like the ray I used to fish in Martira Bay, with my father. Only bigger. Then... It moved with grace toward Christina... It bit her hand. The one with the light. Then It was all dark...
