Netbook Canon

The child of Dementlieuese expatriates, Vedarrak is a rarity among Talons. Vedarrak has learned to negotiate the soldier's battlefield or the gossip's salon with equal skill, and adds to this a considerable talent as a wizard. His choice of vocation has earned him the scorn of his fellow warriors, but his critics have had to speak behind his back, lest he overhear and demonstrate the power of mind over body. Vedarrak is member of the Fraternity of Shadows, though of low rank. [1]

Background

Marcos Vedarrak is of Dementlieuse origin. Marcos is the son of Paul Dirac, a foppish merchant who nonetheless truly admired Falkovnian military discipline and organization. Paul brought his family to Falkovnia when Marcos was only two. The wealthy merchant changed his name to Paul Vedarrak and was able to insinuate himself into Falkovnian society, showing usefulness but not truly earning respect. Paul's sycophantic fawning over the Talons inculcated a sense of loathing for the Talons but also a begruding respect. Paul's squabbles and power games with his wife caught Marcos in the middle, leaving him a humorless perfectionist with an overwhelming need to achieve success at all costs.[2]

Marcos achieved much greater success in winning respect from the Falkovnian military then his father did. Marcos enrolled at the Stangengrad Military Academy and became skilled in several weapons. Yet fellow Dementlieuse expatriate Armande Dupin demonstrated a power far greater than that of the sword. This power to conquer and manipulate the human psyche, that of enchantment magic. Dupin mesmerized Kalt Mecstros, a top instructor at the academy and made him perform a variety of humiliating tasks. His attention drawn, Marcos petitioned Duprin to teach him, and Dupin was more than happy to oblige.[3]

Although he kept his magical talent under wraps, Marcos continued to slowly but steadily rise in the ranks of the Talons. His diplomatic talents earned him the role of emissary to several foreign powers and marriage to Ilya Drakov. Marcos remains a continual supporter of the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of the Arcane, particularly Vjorn Horstman and the Radiant Tower. He also joined the Fraternity of Shadows in secret. His connections have made him a valued asset, yet he remains low in the ranks.[4]

In 756 BC, Marcos procured a forbidden necromancy tome for Erik van Rijn and gave it to him at a general meeting of the Fraternity of Shadows[5]
