My players are currently in a campaign to search for one of the fabled shard of the shield of Ezra in southern Barovia. (A Saint man of Ezra had bring it there in the past)
And now at this part of the game, I'm starting to wonder that my PC might actually take possession of it. Which then lead to the question as to what the Shard will do.
I was personally thinking about something along heal or raise dead once/one period of time. But I find this too classic for an holy item. Any idea that would be better tailor made for such an artifact?
The powers of a Shard of the shield of Ezra?

It's from a shield, and Ezra is something of a protector-deity. I'd give it powerful protective abilities of some kind.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

According to VRA, each shard gives the character wielding it the power of shield of the sect the shard belongs to (one for each sect and a fifth one that's undefined). Also, the alignment of the character is slowly changed to LN subconsciously (DC 18 will or the alignment shifts one alignment closer to LN). Finally, the character is permanetly affected the spells Tongues and Comprehend Languages while holding the shard.
It also has the abilities of a relic (one miracle per year, a few cure spells and the likes).
