As Thierri slumps, Mercator catches him and eases him to the ground. The physician is only peripherally aware of the cat's appearance and departure; his attention is fixed on the dying young man before him.

Loosening his collar with a quick motion, Mercator feels for a pulse at Thierri's throat. "Put something beneath his feet," he says firmly. "He'll need water soon..."

Heal 20. I doubt that's good enough, and it may not be close enough to make Aid Another worthwhile. :?

Nicolas had been staring open mouthed like some country bumpkin throughout the entire operation, if in fact he was truthful the poet was not quite back in shape after his encounter at the nasty end of the engineers wrath.

"Umm, come back you!" He shouts pointlessly after the cat as he finally decides to rejoin the real world, backing it up with a half hearted fist shake. Then he spots the entire point of this misadventure, "Oh right Therri" and smacks himself on the forehead before hustling forward.

"A bit short on water right now, but this should at last revive him somewhat... theres probably water in it" Nicolas says proffering the flask to Thierri's lips, and bundling his cloak under the stricken man's feet.

"Good to have you back mon ami". He says looking with some concern at Theirri's face (of course with the concern veiled behind the usual mask of annoying nonchalance). "Cigarette? No perhaps later then?" He adds quickly seeing the look Mercator undoubtedly gives him.

OOC:
Heal 16 which is just about good enough to aid Mercator.
If it helps Nicolas also throws out a majestic word to allow Thierri to heal surge + 11hp

Rex wasn't there anymore. Whether he'd witnessed Thierri's return to life was hard to say. All that could he'd vanished. As usual.

The pharmacist knew this part of town very well. He knew the way the streets twisted and turned, and which alleys were open. He could navigate in ways that most of Port-a-Lucine's citizens couldn't. Part of that stemmed from the fact that he wasn't afraid to go down that darkened alley everyone else was scared of. He had less to fear, being a shadow himself.

He guessed where the cat was going right away and knew a faster route. Take this turn and scurry down that alley and he'd be there before the feline.

Their Friend probably wouldn't be any wiser.

Rex will go ahead with a Streetwise of 28. His movement speed can effectively be 14 if that makes a difference -- Two move actions of 6 each for a total of 12, then Shifty with Risky Shift for an added 2 squares of movement.

Also, because he can, he will remain in Stealth. I think his last roll was 27 but if a new one is needed, that can be arranged. He takes no penalties to Stealth for moving a lot.

"Not this time, you filthy thing!" Lia snarls as she rises, already tugging her glove back on. Runes of clear, blue light are already taking form as the Mage twirls her wand like a baton, and they spiral into the staff's crystal, which is aimed squarely at the cat. "Globum vis colligo. Globus vis ad inimucum meum volat. Globu vis, inimicum meum perfringe," the Mage chants.

A sphere of pure force cuts through the air, straight towards the cat.

(OOC: Lia casts Force Orb at the cat.
Attack roll: 30!
Damage roll: 25!
Stick that in your feed bowl and eat it, cat!)

At the sight of Thierri's condition post ritual completion, Kerrian's eyes went glazed. Not out of any sense of overwhelming trauma or "oh no, whatever shall we do?". This was more that sort of glazed where he was looking at something very intently, not quite here, not quite there but something most assuredly in that delightful middle of allegory and speculation.

"Tethering. His soul's tether to his body is...loose. Never mind he's been going for days on no food, no water, likely no sleep. Healing magic that enhances natural healing is...damned unlikely to work. We need to use external sources..." Kerrian said, green eyes coming into hyper focus on Thierri, spirit wolf taking up a defensive position next to the previous holder of the office of Death, its posture somewhere between ready to pounce on any threat and ready to nurture an injured pack member.

OOC:Speak with Spirits boosted religion check with a result of 33. OOCly, any power that heals based on target spends a healing surge won't work, so it has to be healing that doesn't rely on the target spending one of their own surges. So Lay on Hands, and some of my healing.

Nerit took one, fleeting glance at Thierri and Celeste, and in that glance everything was said. Her gaze whipped to the fleeing cat.

"SODALE!" she cried. "You cannot have it either!"

Though Rex was already gone on his own, Nerit remembered the last few times they had been down these awful streets, and so knew which way to go.

This, now, was really going to be interesting.

Of all the experiences in the world, having your first ever kiss indirectly cause the recipient to realize that he has been dead for four days...well, allow us to say that it does not rank highly. Not highly at all.

Celeste gave a strangled yelp as Thierri collapsed. It was a testament to the gravity of the situation that she did not, (A), bow to custom and faint dead away, or, (B), process the fact that a significant number of people had been two feet away during the events of the preceding thirty seconds. She just dropped to her knees and started fanning the victim desperately, saying something that sounded like a prayer under her breath. Who cares if fanning the victim was not something that was medically necessary--IT HAD TO WORK.

Nerit finds a shortcut to follow the cat. She neither loses nor gains ground, but Nerit makes all subsequent Athletics checks at (Medium DC) instead of (High DC)
Lia shoots the cat, causing the feline to slip back a 'Length'

Mournswaithe's sphere of force slashed into the runaway feline's body. Had the creature been an actual cat, there wouldn't have been anything more than a crater left of the unfortunate animal. But Your Friend was anything but a normal cat, and he seemed more irritated than pained by the sorcerous attack. On the other hand, while Your Friend may have been difficult to pain, he was still presently in the body of a ten pound cat, and thus the ball of force sent him spinning out of control across the street. Your Friend recovered with as much poise and grace as was possible under the circumstances, but he had lost valuable ground in the process.

Lessard was nowhere to be seen, though you were fairly certain that he had also ran after Your Friend with his deathly cargo.

Remy attempts to roll Streetwise and rolls a 4. So he is now lost, and makes future Athletics Checks at (Very High DC) instead of (High DC).
Nerit wrote:"SODALE!" she cried. "You cannot have it either!"
“Why not?” Your Friend asked as he pulled himself back to his feet, the satchel with the box still resting on his back. The feline examined the situation and concluded that attempting to outrace humans was not going to end well. Your Friend was fast, certainly, but he was also suffering under the impediment of having very short legs, comparatively speaking. In a flat out race, there would be trouble. The solution? To make the race not a horizontal one, but a vertical one.

Your Friend vaulted onto a nearby windowsill, balancing delicately on his paws, and from there onto the awning of a small shop. A third leap brought him up into a tree branch, and a fourth and final jump saw Your Friend land on a narrow stone and brick cornice that ran the length of the street. He hit the brick with his paws and began to run once more, just now he happened to be two stories above ground.

The Cat leaps to the level above you. New Skill: Use Acrobatics (Medium DC) to get onto the same level).

The cat at present remains one 'Length' ahead of Rex, Lia, and Nerit, two lengths of ahead of anyone joining the chase just now.

Nicolas Aids Another, Majestic Word does not activate due to Thierri's lack of surges.
Celeste Aids Another
Mercator attempts to heal, does not succeed despite two Aid Another bonuses.
Kerrian figures out something of what is wrong with Thierri. All Heal rolls gain +2 for the rest of the challenge.

The Whistler wrote:Celeste just dropped to her knees and started fanning the victim desperately, saying something that sounded like a prayer under her breath. Who cares if fanning the victim was not something that was medically necessary--IT HAD TO WORK.
It didn't.

Thierri's breathing was faint, and his heartbeat was becoming increasingly irregular. Despite a great deal of well-meaning aid, the young magician was steadily slipping away. It could occur to a medically-talented individual that there were worse fates than death, if something was not done. A cutting off of oxygen to the brain, and perhaps death would be kinder than to Thierri than living without his much-vaunted wits. Of course, at the current rate, living of any sort did not seem to be very likely.

Thierri loses 1/4th his HP, slipping closer to death.
VIEW CONTENT:
Challenge: Save Thierri!
Giving Thierri medical attention – Heal (High DC) [All Heal rolls receive +2 thanks to Kerrian and Remy]
Figure out what is wrong with Thierri – Arcana or Religion (Medium DC)

Powers that would allow another person to spend one of their healing surges do not work in this situation (Lay on Hands or similar surge-transferral systems would work). Each round, Thierri loses a quarter of his hitpoints, until and unless he is stabilized.

Characters who embark upon one challenge are unable to participate in the other (so if you chase after the cat, you can’t go and give Thierri medical attention, and vice versa). As always, appropriate use of powers can grant bonuses or automatic successes on rolls.

"That was not given to you, you furry little thief!" Lia snarls as she dashes along, and swings her staff up and forward. "Magistra ignis sum! Per iussu meu, sphaeram ignis expandentiam volat et inimicum meum vorat! Incipe!"

The staff's crystal flares bright red, and crimson flame bursts out of thin air, enveloping the cat and the ledge he is running on. It is very fortunate that the buildings are made of brick and stone, rather than wood, or there would be a serious fire hazard. As it is, everyone can hear the sharp Ping!-noises of superheated brick cooling in the night air.

(OOC: Lia casts Fireburst on the fleeing cat.
Attack roll: 29
Damage roll: 23.)

Alerted to the fact that Thierri has more than exhaustion and dehydration to contend with...and feeling the young necromancer's pulse, fast and thready...Mercator rocks back on his heels and stares, trying to clear his thoughts before proceeding with further treatment.

"Yes, M. Mauganson...he has no reserves," he mutters. "No native energies to call on. The flesh is weak, and the spirit wounded. If..."

He looks up and around, to find that a significant part of the group--probably including their pharmacist, although given his unusual predilection for going unnoticed, one can't be certain--is gone.

"Never mind, then. We must mend the spirit first, and that is outside my expertise...M. Mauganson, you had better take the lead, and we will render what assistance we can."

Arcana 28. Basically, Thierri's soul is all in pieces, and it's not exactly the kind of thing Mercator deals with as a physician. Sooo...I suggest that everyone help Kerrian!

Nicolas looked rather put out that Thierri didn't respond, in fact anyone watching would get the distinct impression (if they hadn't lived with the insufferable poet for months) that Nicolas had big issues with being ignored. Fortunately circumstances forced his focus away form introspection and everyone was spared a hissy fit. As it is he looks rather intrigued by Mercator's pronouncement.

"So it'll take more that a rousing sonnet or a dirty haiku to bring him back then? I...." he pauses as if seeing something startling for the first time. "Oh... right, yes , well actually I 100% concur with the Doctor's prognosis, not that it stops me feeling bloody useless, mind. Still, Kerrian mon fils, please do what you can, I suspect we have little time to effect the cure, see already he slips closer once more to deaths icy breast."

He finishes with an attempt at a comforting look at Celeste "Chin up ma chere, this fight is not over yet."

Arcana 30 - which with Nathan and YV's bonuses should now give us +6 on heal checks - Go Kerrian....

Nerit had no time to make side commentary, but if she had, Lia would know just how much of a mistake calling it "little" might be.

"You already know what I'm going to say," Nerit shouted at the rooftop. One moment she was on the ground, and the next she was not, yet she was no magician if you asked her.

Closer again to the 'cat,' she said, "It belongs to the Lady."

Kerrian closed his eyes in concentration, and around him the world began to change. The roar of storm tossed seas, the smell of new topsoil just brought to the fore by the action of flooding rivers, givers of life and givers of death at the same time. Were there foes surrounding them, they would be experiencing the death aspect quite a bit more, but for now Kerrian's only concern was the lifegiving aspect of the Spirit of the Flood. It's energies poured into Thierri, trying to sustain his injured soul, give it new energy and new vitality.

OOC:Spirit of the Healing Flood. All allies in Burst 5 gain Regeneration 2 while bloodied, and can end the effect as a minor action to regain 10 hp. Which according to the GM counts as an auto success on Thierri. Who will also regain 3 hp on top of it due to spirit companion adjacency. Also, I am NOT the person to have make heal checks, not being trained in it just yet. Let me crank out religions

Rex emerged from an alley in time to see the cat climb to the second story and shook his head. He sometimes went to work via rooftop, and was at least as nimble as his quarry.

The pharmacist found an outcrop on a nearby building and hauled himself up, then leaped to the next platform. Silent as a ghost, he caught an overhang and climbed on the cat's level and moved forward quietly.

In situations such as these, Celeste was more than willing to admit that being an “emergency medical services hobbyist” was not enough to appropriately rise to the occasion. Knowing how to use smelling salts is not the sort of thing that can fix sudden-onset complete cardiovasculary failure, unless one is really creative with a syringe.

Another tactic, then. Celeste got her arms under Thierri’s shoulders, lifted him up slightly, and leant over him, keenly conscious that while it was the gentleman who usually did this sort of thing, these were Desperate Times.

“Sir! When I said that your story must not end here, I was not being so very metaphorical as is my usual custom! You have performances to give! Causes to champion! Arcane mastery to further! Friends to engage in pleasant conversation! …Rather…ah a great deal of other matters to attend to as well…” Celeste blushed quite severely, it being patently obvious the category of things that she was currently thinking of. “…And, sir, I may add that I would very much like to be present for some of it! Thus, I must ask—no, I must categorically demand, M. Boucher, that you recollect the sundry pieces of your soul and return to consciousness this very instant! Otherwise…oh, I shall be extremely displeased, sir!”
