Our club has suggested ten rounds of silence, then reading choice bits if Tomb of Horrors aloud as fitting tribute and eulogy.

I'm sure he'd appreciate the gesture, Isabella ... especially if they're one minute rounds, a la 1st Edition.

He signed my brand-new 3E Player's Handbook at GenCon 2000. It happened at the very end of the convention, so he put a little

Dateline 1982: Donald Fagen has since left Steely Dan and is enjoying success with his single I.G.Y (International Geophysical Year), Prince's Little Red Corvette would dominate radio airplay the following summer, and a 12 year old boy, me, spends most of his free time exploring the caverns of his imagination. The game was Dungeons & Dragons, a role-playing game which allowed anyone, even a junior high school kid, to leave the mundane world behind and step over the horizon to seek adventure and fortune in the robes of a wily wizard or the armor of a brave hero. Now, thirty years after its first appearance, the Dungeons & Dragons game is still going strong and its escapism is even more relevant in the work-a-day world of frustrating politics, bills, and deadlines of a 35 year old man. To arms, my companions, the dragon awaits!

I think it's safe to say that he has been one of the most influencial man not involved in politics of the 20th century (and 21th since we're still alive).

All the books I learned to play D&D with have "Gary Gygax" on the cover.

Sad to think he's gone.

He gave me the best hobby I could ever have. He has influenced my life more than a little. He has provided the authors of some of my favorite books the world, system and theme to write about in these books.

One of his best quotes as recall it (IIRC):

"I hate the tons of new rules and the tones of rules lawyers that come with them"

I've not been around much, but I came here as soon as I heard the news.

I feel the need to somehow pay homage to Gary. The first book I read of the D&D was the Basic Set Player's book with Elmore's cover, and I've been taken away by it. Never again was my life the same, nor Gary Gygax a stranger. Like someone above, there were times I disagreed with his point of view, but his achievements were so great and so defining for my self, that I owe him a mountain horde of gratitude.

Thank you, Gary, may you rest in peace, and shine like a beacon on us all, devoted gamers.
