BTH: Katrina Von Brandthofen

Post by DeepShadow of FoS »

From the Bait This Hook thread, giamarga raised a lot of questions about Mordenheim's neice:
Katrina is also on card #424 of the 1992 TSR Trading cards. She´s a 4th level Diviner, alignment LN and owns a necklace of adaption.

The background on the card reads:
Katrina is Victor Mordenheim´s niece by marriage. She is a hauntingly beautiful woman who wears clothing that accents her athletic figue. she has been looking for her aunt -her mother´s twin sister - for years, hoping to find information regarding her past. She has failed to enlist the elusive Mordenheim´s aid.

The Book of Crypts also notes :

Though her family escaped Ravenloft when she was young, a few years ago Katrina was drawn in again, arriving in Valachan. [...] Katrina believes she is always right. This ferocious tenacity and independance has been with her ever since her father failed to return from war when she was a young child. Her mother alone raised Katrina and her younger brother. Katrina´s brother contracted yellow fever when he was six and died a few painful weeks later. This destroyed Katrina´s mother. She soon broke down into a catatonic state unable to eat. She died three weeks later. When her mother died Katrina was taken to an uncle´s ahouse; he took time and patience to raise his niece. This helped Katrina readjust to life without her parents. However she yearned for the company of her aunt, the twin of her deceased mother.

[...]
Katrina has found during her short lifetime that she can trust very few peopl in Ravenloft. She is wary of those she meets on the road. She rarely trusts anyone enough to tell of her life and of her travels.

In the adventure the PCs wake at night and find Mordenheim strapping Katrina to a horrible device and mind-switching Elise´s soul into Katrina´s body. (And conversely Katrina´s soul into Elise´s tortured body)

And this is the proposed ending:
If the characters save Katrina´s life, the PCs [...] have gained an ally in Ravenloft. Katrina will not join them in their tavels to escape Ravenloft. She instead chooses to return to her home, where she plans to rejoin the family she has not seen in years.

My take is that she used to be LG but some dark acts in the past drew her back into Ravenloft. Now that all her suspicions about Mordenheim have been confirmed (Mordenheim strapped her to some kind of apparatus in the adventure) she vows to take vengeance on the Doctor and to rescue her aunt. To this end she has hired adventurers in the past, carefully screening them but she always fails in this somehow. Often because she misread one of her companions as her powers of divination don´t work right in Ravenloft. Against the godless Doctor´s they always fail (Metaphysical Resistance class feature from the Scientist PrC). Her singlemindedness and distrust combined with her haughty attitude about being always right has lead her down a path of corruption where she denies any blame for the deaths of the adventurers she led to their doom. Though she symbolized much of what is contrary to the Mordenheim blood (by using magic and believing in it) she can´t escape her legacy.

Now if someone could elaborate on the dark acts that drew her here and/or tie Adam into this somehow...

Did perhaps Katrina somehow cause of her younger brother´s death? Did her mother die because she didn´t feed her? How did she come to study Divination? What happened to her uncle? What last act drew her into Ravenloft ? What did she experience in Valachan and her travels from there to Lamordia? Also in BoC the PCs meet her at the beach. Does this have any sigificance? Did being strapped to some horrible device and mindswitched with Victor´s wife shatter her sanity? Does Mordenheim perhaps hunt for her to use her agian as a receptable for his wife´s soul? Is part of her aunt´s soul perhaps still in Katrina? Where did Katrina get a necklace of adaption from? Did she alread have to use it sometime? (perhaps she travelled per ship and it sunk? Or it somehow interacted with Mordenheims strange device...)
Okay, here's my expansion on the above: Katrina suffered a Madness effect from mental contact with Elise. She had a Denial effect, which led to her ignoring Elise's plight and wanting to go back to her homeworld. After it wore off, she was already in Dementlieu, and she started berating herself for her foolishness at not striking harder at Mordenheim.

Katrina has redoubled her efforts against Mordenheim since that day, seeking the Societe de Legerdemain and the Van Richten Society to establish a stronger network and avail herself of the scholarship on flesh golems. More recently, she has sought out mesmerists who could recover her memories of Mordenheim's laboratory, hoping to find details that could be used against Mordenheim. Recently, the transcripts of her hypnosis sessions were stolen by an agent of the Brain.

Giamarga, I'm curious as to what "legacy" you think Katrina should inherit from her uncle. Is she an inheritor of the Mordenheim traits in any way?

Hey, whaddya say we give Katrina some levels in Avenger? That would make up for her deficiency in divination against Mordenheim!

By rights she'd inherit Brandthofen traits, assuming there are such things.

BTW, why is Katrina's surname "von Brandthofen", if her mother was Elise's twin sister? Wouldn't she have her father's last name? :?

Cousin marriage or some such, perhaps.

I figured Elise's maiden name was von Brandthofen. Isn't it? EDIT: Ah i see. It is but she should have her father's name. Well being the headstrong young woman she is maybe she took her mother's name after her family died.

And yes by legacy I meant the Mordenheim traits, probably not the actual racial traits, but the general family theme/curse. I like the madness check and her study into fleshgolems but I'm missing the darker side of her fate, i.e. becoming like Mordenheim in hating him and singlemindedly going for her goal to the exclusion of moral doubts.

I'm not quite sure if i would give her Avenger levels though. What are the prerequisites again? Jaded feat and some ranks in Sense Motive? She could pull of that one, hmmm... I'll have to post my notes on her stats. (And Mordenheim's too)

Also I still think that those questions on her past need to be adressed.

I'm interested in a potential dark side, but I'm not convinced this needs to be it.

Well, it's not that hard to qualify for--quite the contrary--but I just thought it was a good fit for the kind of driven obsession you were talking about.
Also I still think that those questions on her past need to be adressed.
Sure, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. If she really did fall from LG to LN, then something sinister is in order, but are we sure she did? I don't see anything to indidate she had any role in the deaths of her mother and brother.

OTOH, I like the idea that her mental contact with Elise had some lasting effects. I'd personally like to see her as a resource for good--tainted perhaps, but still good overall. Maybe her hypnosis sessions opens up a mental conduit with Elise?

Maybe when her father never came back from a war, her mother went back and lived with her family? Could she have reassumed her maiden name? If her husband wasn't noble, could the children have had to take her name to inherit a living?

Could the uncle she lived with have been a Von Brandhofen, and she took his name upon adoption?

...okay, so instead of Denial, she has the Unhinged madness effect, which spins her into Chaotic Neutral just long enough to qualify...

Never mind. I think Avenger is out. Not all people obsessed with vengeance become avengers anyway.

Is she obsessed with vengeance, or does she just want Elise to be free? Could she be working towards allowing Elise to finally die, as she wishes?

I remember her! My DM ran us through all the adventures in the Book of Crypts.

I really like the idea of Katrina determined to kill her aunt. It gives her a kind of morbid finality, what with all the others of her family dead, now she has to slay the aunt that is her one last connection. The worst part is, of course, that Elise is being kept alive by the Dark Powers, so Katrina can't kill her. She can try, but that will only make her aunt suffer more.

Giamarga, does that give you the mirror of Mordenheim that you wanted? Victor obsessed with rejuvenating Elise, blind to the fact that she wants to die; Katrina obsessed with killing Elise, blind to the fact that it's not in her power to release her aunt?

Yes, that is quite good. I'll post my ntoes on Katrina's and Victor's stats on the weekend.

I'd still like more details about her being/becoming a diviner. Is she a medium or an oracle, does she read tea-leaves? Is she a self-study or did she have a master? Where did she learn it? I find it hard to reconcile her being a diviner with her background and feel so far.

(I think in the adventure they made her a diviner solely to check out the PCs thoroughly.)

I know what you mean...

Okay, here's a thought that I rejected at first, maybe we can make something of it: Katrina's bio says that she always feels like she's right, ever since her father failed to return from a war. That might just be awkward sentence construction...or it could be cause and effect. Could that be a reference to Katrina's oracular powers predicting her father's failure to return? She would have been very young, and therefore we're probably not talking about a wizard who specializes in Divination, but a sorcerer with oracular gifts.

Or there might be some divine version. I'm sure you could dredge up some divine oracle class that she'd be appropriate for, if anyone could. Then again, her original had her statted as an arcane caster....

It bears thinking about.

Sorcerer could work very well. Perhaps this is a case where the conversion needs to stray form the original stats. It sure would explain her crappy spell selection with only detection spells.

(BTW there is a PrC called Divine Oracle which is accessible to arcane casters at CL5, needs 8 ranks either in Knowledge religion or arcana and lost of divination spells.)
