That was EXACTLY what you needed to drop him.
You can post Thom chasing further (infravision shows the heat trail of the torch at a longer distance) and downing the guy with a shot at some distance.
This action carries Thom closer to the house wall, out of sight but not out of hearing of the rest of the party.
