Let's say there is a 1 in 6 chance they have a gnome (or boy) -sized shirt of mail.

I'm honestly asking because I'm not sure what is best and looking for input.

None of us buddy. Sorry nor I or Fild could suggest something better.
To make it more clear, Fild's opinion is "Don't flee, help people, shoot pirates" and he doesn't mind whether he defends the harbor, the Savelles or the Hoblins or both.
He's also under no illusion that he's a game-changer. He's a 1st lvl warrior with moderate stats and studded leather. :) Yes, he knows he's better than the average guard (specialized, more hp, arquebus). Not much better.

It was a bad day to choose not to memorize sleep Adam. :(

You can ask for INT checks at this juncture, if you like.

Make the roll and I may offer a clue or suggestion.

The pirates hid inside cargo holds to gain surprise against the wharf inspectors and guards.

Some sort of quickly improvised trickery might allow the party to take similiar advantage of the baddies.

Foeble holds I assume? He's been smuggling pirates in the city?
That's why "it has to be tonight!" for the wedding. Aldron knew his "special cargo" would be arriving in a day or two.

Let's torch his ships while we're at it.

I concur. Their whole raid goes tits-up if there's no way for the pirates to get back out of the city.

As an added bonus, the watch cannot maintain neutrality in the faction war, if they start burning Foeble ships. So, that's something that should fall to the outside-the-law mercs.

Let's get hold of whatever allies we could find in the mess. The tough Fild berfriended in prison, Gertie's contacts, the guys Tom nearly killed etc. Promise them that they can loot Foeble holds while we will do much\most of the fighting. Tell them they will be protected by the law since Foeble is in league with enemies of the state.
OK it may turn out that they WILL be prosecuted after the dust settles... but let's not mention that. Let's assure them that they won't.

The guys Tom nearly killed are working for Aldron so better not talk to them. :P

GETTING POWDER

CHR check. Simple success to obtain a cask of powder. Alfonse or Titus would be the best at this task, given social standing.

If the first roll fails, others may attempt a roll at a cumulative -2 penalty. Anyone lower class takes an additional -1.

Crit fail ( Nat 20 ) stops all rolls and cuts off any further supplies or similiar help from guards.

Crit success (Nat 1) gets you something extra. ;)

Time of day

Part of the party was taken in around six in the morning.

Meeting with whole group and NPCs by about nine.

Add nine hours for rest, eating, maintenance, spell prep

So it's past six in the afternoon.

Because this is late summer in a middle latitude, you still have a couple of hours of daylight.

I'm basing POVERO time on Verona.
