Go to Gertie and then he plans to attack from behind with the longwsword.

To get the shield from his back needs an extra action? If yes he will first do that and then attack.

If Gertie doesn't want to attack then he won't do it either. He won't fight alone.

You guys not only gain surprise, you may even attempt backstabs.

If you don't want to kill, and you have a suitable blunt weapon/object, you may use the 'thief KO/mugging' option.

Even taking a penalty to use the flat or pommel of the sword, that 19 could be a mugging attack and a hit. Great roll, Van.

Or are you going for a blow that injures, not just stuns?

And Steve, what about Gertie?

The alley is narrow, but you can attack two abreast.

More than that cannot--which is one reason that lone guy has not been overcome yet.

REST OF PARTY:

None of you have any immediate indication your friends are getting ina fight.

But you did hear what they said as they left, a short time ago.

Take whatever actions you please.

And, yes, he has time to unsling and grip his shield before normal initiative begins.

I'm waiting to see if Gertie wants to fight or no. Tom will try to stun at first since he doesn't really know what is going on.

And yes he gets the shield.

noted

Since you rolled the attack roll, I will adjudicate the result now.

But I won't go further with the combat until Steve posts.

saving throw for alleyman to avoid nap nap

You have surprise.

One round of action in which the alley men cannot respond to you.

THEN we roll initiative.

Whip attack
Is that a backstab?

There is no reason why it can't be.
