Devlin

"Of course, yes," Devlin rubs his eyes and stands, discarding his bedding. "Have some boiled eggs in tea brought to me along with a grapefruit or Orange with brown bread and jam." I will be ready for court soon. I want to be debriefed immediatley on the state of affairs here in Haes and with the forces that have been training."

He walks over to Sir Rory.

"It is good to see you my friend. How has Roald been during my absence? I wish to see the Siegebreaker at once."

Safana emerges from her residence. For a short time her face looks furious and humiliated, but she quickly smooths that away and composes herself with a deep breath. Heading down to the bustling court she prepares herself to say her farewells to Sir Ranald. Turning her face to the south, she prepares to accompany the Duke's cortege southwards to civilisation!

She hopes...

LORD FILBERT

For more than three weeks, Lord Filbert has travelled by land and water, visiting first the court of Aeric Boeruine and afterward going southwards to the rival court of Darien Avan at Daulton.

In the great gray keep of Seaharrow , he did not have to wait long to gain an audience with Aeric Boeruine, the powerfully built, hearty lord of Boeruine. Filbert recognized the man at once, because of a flame red streak in his graying hair, the mark of his bloodline.
The Archduke held court in a in a great fire-lit feasting hall where old-fashioned tapestries depicting woodland scenes of war or the chase hung on the high walls paneled in dark wood and the stentorian west-country minstrels chanted of bloody affrays and killer boars.

His news about Duke Carilon’s league with the goblin mercenaries brought this blunt response from the archduke:
“If Duke Devlin recognizes my rightful claim to the Iron Throne and accepts me as his liege-lord, I will aid him against his foes, goblins and men alike. If not, I will continue to help the Tuors against the Manslayer, as in the past, but I can’t do more for him. I have to think of the good of my bannermen and my lands, first. If he joins me, then he becomes part of ‘first.’ Tell him so, Lord Filbert.”

...

After the leaving rainy, windy port of Seaharrow by ship and spending several days seasick and wave-tossed, Filbert reached the garden country of Avanil, where summer comes early.
At the princely palace in Daulton, the capital, Filbert was hosted with rich wine and good food.

After a brief delay, he was granted a private audience with Prince Darien of House Avan, a lithe, hawk faced blond man with an unusual draconic bloodmark showing on his face and neck.

“I would be much pleased to aid His Grace. Friendship and good feeling between our two realms is of great importance to me. An alliance could be concluded on terms satisfactory to both parties, I should think. Please inform your master that it is my strong desire to bring peace and order to the lands of Anuire, and that I hope that he will help me do just that.”

...

(PRESENT)

Now he has returned at last to Haes
, coming north from Avanil by the overland road that took him through the peaceful southern provinces of Turoen, rich garden lands untouched by the brutal war with the Alamiens and goblins.

At Caer Haes, Filbert is greeted by castle servants who inform him that Duke Devlin has come home last night.

''Roald has been making a lot of trouble for Duke Carilon. He stole his pleasure barge. Sold it, even."

The old knight chuckles.

"I'll send someone to bring him here, Your Grace."

Safana says her goodbyes and departs with the Duke’s company.

…

ROELIR 1ST, 551 M.R.
HAES

In Haes she finds excellent lodgings at a well-appointed, clean, newly refurbished inn.
Over the next week or so, she has time to get a feel for the city and its inhabitants, and to establish some contacts at court besides the handsome young Duke Devlin.

Haes is rather dirtier and less refined a locale than the sunlit brick and marble cities of Khinasi lands, but the bustling river port city does offer a lot in the way of culture: stage plays, minstrels, masquerade balls, and the like. In contrast to the rustic hunter lairds of Ghonallison province she encounters a more urbane sort of upper class here in the capital city; men and women in ruff collars and silken clothing, rapiers for the menfolk and fans for the ladies. But there also seem to be more beggars and thieves, whores and pimps, than in the poorer lands of the north.
Today, she has an unexpected visitor…
VIEW CONTENT:
Sir Ranald, his old bearskin coat exchanged for a green cloak, stands at her door with a bunch of honeysuckle flowers in one fist.
“Lady Safana, pleased to see you.”

Unless Devlin has other words for the old man, he will go about his tasks.

HAES, WATCH HQ

Renn looks down at the stack of parchments in front of him. "Aye, Sergent. I've done enough paperwork for now, at least." Renn knew he'd be coming back to a mess after having been away for so long. But Gilly had run the watch effectively enough that the problems were merely maddening instead of impossible."

"A walk it is," Renn says, then stands to leave the headquarters. He does not get very far out onto the streets before he sees Roald heading in his direction.

"Hail, Siegebreaker!" Renn calls out, approaching the sellsword. "I've been hearing rumors about your exploits since my absence--none of the news good for Carilon, I hear."
"You said I killed you--haunt me, then!...Be with me always--take any form--drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!” -Wuthering Heights

WATCH HQ

Roald smiles. "I've been up to some shenanigans while you were out of the city." He points at the scar on Renn's face. "I see your trip up North was eventful."
"Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it."

TORTHUR & BEARS

The dwarf picks up the key and undoes his shackles, rubbing his wrists, ankles and neck from the chafing. Now he looks at Clyde and frees him as well. The bear grunts and says something to the other two captives. He nudges Torthur towards the two bears and the dwarf nods.

He approaches them slowly and grunts and growls at them, like he does Clyde. They both are sad to look at but wilder than his Clyde. It takes him a few minutes but he manages to gain their trust and he frees them. Now the grate portcullis is next. He flexes his arms and grips the bars. He grunts and with some effort, bends teh bars wide enough to get through. Now he looks and with some luck, lifts and opens the portcullis with a mechanism. With some nudging and calm voice he gets the three bears to exit. He walks carefully up the ramp, bears in tow. He stops as he exits the ramp into the Arena which is empty. HE quickly finds his gear and takes off the bear costume, keeping it. Let em wonder whut happened ta tha bears, he chuckles to himself. He keeps the key as well.

Donning his own gear he looks around, thinking. He finds an exit and leads the ursines out into Lofton. The morning is crisp and quiet out in the streets, not a soul about yet.

CORMAC

"Many thanks," the Rjurik man says, picking up the sack of coins and securing it to his pouch. If there is nothing more, he'll shake hands with the messenger and go rejoin the workers.

He walks through the work site, seeking out Dietric. He waves the fighting man over to him, gesturing that he grab a seat on a stump next to him. He details the offer from the messenger and their concern about the Celestial Jewel. "Ye heard anythin' abou' these folks? Know any place aroun' here they're movin' in?"
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

" Yeah, they worship Saramie, the Lady of Fortune. They claim to be honest merchants, but from what I have heard, they aren't much different than, well, bandits like what I used to be."

Dietric frowns.

"I don't know if they are moving in around here, but maybe they would try that. I hear they have temples just across the border in Sorelies, loaded with gold and silver."

TORTHUR & THE BEARS
The two lean bears don’t seem to want to leave Torthur’s side, at least not at first. They follow him through quiet morning streets, growling and shaking their heads as if they’d just woken up from winter sleep.

Clyde ambles along with his new friends, sniffing at shuttered windows and along the bottoms of closed doors.

One of the starved bears smashes into the back of a bakery! The plump baker working at the oven shrieks on seeing the bears in his workplace, jumps back into a low doorway, hits his head, and passes out. The other hungry bear joins the burglar bear, and both begin to trash the place, eating many loaves of fresh bread and scarfing down hot pies.

Torthur may be fairly sure that the hungry bears won’t eat the unconscious man.

The dwarf may be distracted by the bears' antics, but he doesn't fail to hear someone or several someones creeping up on his rear.

TORTHUR,cont.

Turning round in the alley that runs from street to street behind the bakery, Torthur sees three men in armor jacks with truncheons coming up on him.

The dwarf recognizes one of them; a short, flabby-faced man with greasy hair and rotten teeth. He had seen this man earlier this morning while looking through the wagon bars as he was taken into the the bear baiting arena.

The man speaks-
"Look here, dung-eater, did you steal our bears?"

I'm jes' ere with me friend Clyde, mindin me own business. I seed some bears eatin some bread back that way if ye lost em.
