Well... I would say (OK, I've already said it) that 4E has more or less ran it's course. They have Many MManuals published, the cosmology books published, the Class books published, many of the race books published... OK, they could go for weird ascesories, but the target buyers of "Martial power 49" would be quite small.
To be sincere, I don't have much time (or money) to spent on new books. But truth be told, I haven't bought a book or even took more than a passing glance at them in the store for ... a long time.
Yes, they need a new set of rules. 4E has covered the essentials that most the customers buy, the ascessories that many of the customers buy and is now on niche selling.

Yeah I saw that, and I've signed up for it. I've asked everyone who plays on the Neverwinter Nights server I DM on to sign up too.
Some promising signs here. They've hired Monte Cook as lead designer for the new edition, and Mike Mearls says they want to be as inclusive of previous editions as possible. That last statement in and of itself is a huge step in the right direction--who knows how sincere it is, but even expressing it is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

4th edition is also "previous edition", what I think they mean is that they'll keep around the changes that happened to Faerun and the other settings. We have a full and detailed cosmology for 3rd edition. They could throw a book (and many would buy it) about how that cosmology would work in 4th edition, how you could get rid of the shadowfell and Feywild etc and instead use ethereal, elemental planes etc but I doupt they can just write off 4E change to cosmology.
Not to mention, that the simpler cosmology of 4E works better for many DMs and players. If they are the majority or not... that remains to be decided.

They ask us to sign up if we're interested to do our part in case they decide to include us.
