Rock wrote:"A commendable striving, Monsieur Sancerre," Everline says, and she nods to the older man. "I might even go so far as to suggest that you keep a small cave private for yourself and any close friends who might visit you; it should help preserve the mystery and the joy of the place."

''That's a wonderful idea, my girl!''

He wades deeper into the pool and lifts his arms over his head.

''King of the caverns! Haaahhaaahhaaaa!''

"Well, it helps my work, as well," Everline says with a small smile on her lips. "If I can put it in the Gauntcliff travelogue that only part of the cave complex is open to the public and much still remains to be dicovered, then it will titillate the thrill-seekers and the armchair scholars."

''That's another fine idea."

After walking about the rim of the pool, Denys emerges and picks up his shoes in one hand, the lantern in the other.

By this time, Everline is getting very sweaty in her clothes.

"Shall we go back up, or would you like to spend more time down here?"

"Back up, please," Everline replies. "If I stay down here much longer, dressed like this, I fear I might as well have jumped into the water with my clothes on."

Eustace turns to Dorgio and Benn, as the Lamordian reads aloud what the inscription says.

"It's very interesting, and I'm sure it refers to some kind of solar-god. But at this point, I'd like to reserve my thoughts on this. I would be very glad to tell you some things I found in my readings in a cosier and warmer place, in Sancerre's hall by the fire, for example. But I don't think this was an evil temple, that much seems certain. Now... it would be best if we got on moving, or at least sheltered with the mules and Melmoth."

Eustace tries to see where the guide has gone. What is the will of the group, follow Melmoth's advice or get back in the rain?

Bennedict walks towards the mules, plodding along with his cane thumping against the ground. He hunches his jacket up against the coming rain.

"It's possible the temple was desecrated," he muses aloud, "Or perhaps the door, as the writing would indicate, may have been built to seal away some evil and keep it contained. Though, I would venture that the presence of the shadow creature in the well may indicate that the seal has become, ahem, a bit porous."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

"Perhaps the god was another aspect of the Morninglord, or perhaps another god, as you were saying Eustace...perhaps something that could link my people's worship to yours? I am wanting to know more...strange that so little is known of this temple."

"I am not liking the idea of spending more time in the rain than we need to. Taking shelter in that cave may not be the worst idea we've had today. But I do not think we should tarry there long. Who knows what could be waiting for us, seeing what we've already seen today?"

Primeiro nods in agreement with Dorgio. "Melmoth doubts that the rain will last long," he says. He looks over his shoulder toward the ruin every few seconds, as though he's expecting some new menace to emerge. "I suggest we stay in that shelter for no more than, say, another 20 minutes, and then we return to the chateau even if it hasn't stopped raining. Based on what we've seen and heard, a thorough drenching is less troubling than whatever resides in the abbey."

"To be honest, the feeling in my bones tells me to get moving. I don't think it would be wise to spend even 20 minutes in that cave. We'll be riding in the dark already at the end of our journey, I fear if we tarry we'll have to spend the whole night here, and I would not welcome that."

Eustace then continues to Dorgio

"Yes... another aspect of the same god. I'm thinking towards that myself. You'll like to know what I found. But also... what I remembered" he trails off musingly.

While following the group of his comarades toward the cave by which the guide has sought cover from the storm, he listens only slightly to each of their exclaimations. As the rain begins to pelt them harder and thicker, he turns his face skyward to welcome the drenching. Petrie seems content in the downpour as there is no physical sign of discomfort on his facade.

When a lull presents itself among his companions, he speaks up. "I do not think this is so bad. 'Tis rather calming if ya ask me. All I needs now for a more complete afternoon is a wench on my lap, a wee campfire, and warm mug of hard cider."

He chuckles a sound from his deep within his gullet, "Huhuhugh... Sorry, I just enjoy a fine rain... 'tis just like home only warmer." Petrie returns his gaze among the group to gather their reactions, "I'll stay 'ere at the cave wif any who would wait out the storm. For those of you content to return right now, I suggest it be done wif someone to watch your back."

Dorgio grins and laughs at Petrie's comment. "All that is sounding good, but I am worrying about wearing out the mules. He said they are needing a rest, no?"

"But if we are staying, we should not be taking long...and we should be keeping ourselves well lit, as Benn said. And Eustace, I'll have to be hearing your theories once we get that cider Petrie mentioned."

He stops then, his face creasing into a frown. Can the mules really need that much rest? He turns to peer at the beasts, looking for any sign of fatigue.

tarlyn wrote:Juergin ponders both choices and frowns. Thinking to himself Better to come back with more time to explore tomorrow. I would really like to go visit the library and see what I might find there.

Putting away his belongings, he begins to walk out, whispering to himself "I wonder what is behind that door unt vwat the strange scripture on de walls was?" (This is presuming that Benn or anyone else hasn't told him what they meant, of course.) Once outside, he turns to Thom. "I will begin asking questions this evening about the Abbey unt this dead girl Maggie. With luck I should get some good information. Haff you any advice for me seeing as you are more accomplished than I at getting information from people. Like I said, being young lad I might get better results than perhaps an adult, Herr Thom."
Thom lets out a soft chuckle and shakes his head at Juergin. Just that use your youth to your advantage. Try not focus on specific questions though, generalize and listen in on what other maids have to say. Just remember women love to talk, especially servants." He says to him. "Maybe try to befriend some of the younger maids." He says then chuckles again.

Thom remains silent for a time while the rest of the party discusses whether or not to stay in the cave.

The bath caves
Rock wrote:"Back up, please," Everline replies. "If I stay down here much longer, dressed like this, I fear I might as well have jumped into the water with my clothes on."

"Yes, of course."

Denys leads the way back up to the surface.

Once outside the bathhouse, in the open air, he says,

"I think it may rain. Observe the sky, mademoiselle."

Everline sees that the sky in the east is darkening with thick clouds.

"I say," Everline says, her tone of voice very mild. "Didn't some of your other guests say they were going to explore the old abbey? I should hope they thought to bring their umbrellas..."
