"Miss Phebe, are you there?" Harold cries out. "Miss Phebe!"

If his shouts draw no mortal reply, either from within the room or the rest of the corridor, Harold takes five steps back and raises his left hand in a threatning gesture.

"Woe-struck spirit, share not your pain with the innocent! Sphaira oxydyne!"

A small orb of green liquid swirls into being in front of Harold's hand and hurtles at the door. It splashes the wood around the lock and eats into it, dissolving it. As soon as Harold judges the lock is loosened enough, he rams the door with his quarterstaff as long as he needs to to open it.

(OOC: Harold casts Lesser Orb of Acid at the door to separate the lock or latch or whatever from the surrounding wood -- provided no one opens up or comes to provide more mundane help! I'm not completely crazy. ;))

Sebastain's brow furrows in concentration as he works his spell, finally he looks up and says. "I believe that there's still an unliving presence down here, though I don't know what its precise nature is. We should exercise extreme caution while we are down here."

Goran follows the others of his retinue at a distance; the tactic opens his breadth of space to allow his senses to adjust to the underdank. The peculiar frost alerts him further.

The ranger finally breaks his long silence with a low tone, "This is no place for a man of the woods," he pauses brieflly then continues, "nor for any living thing."

He takes this moment to tie back his long dreads and pull one of his simple longswords from its scabbard. Goran slowly moves forward with the rest of his companions; his edged weapon poised with its point held low.

Tristan adjusts the strap of his slung musket.

''Hmmm...we should make a map of these tunnels."

Upstairs-
(OOC: Harold casts Lesser Orb of Acid at the door to separate the lock or latch or whatever from the surrounding wood -- provided no one opens up or comes to provide more mundane help! I'm not completely crazy. ;))
The arcane energy unloosed by Harold slams into the door latch, the acid from the spell making quick work. The door lazily swings open while a sudden explosion of flame exits the room engulfing the elder man.

But the flames do not burn.

As the fireball dissipates, Harold spies Miss Pheobe standing in the doorway: her gown is burned in areas and her hair is singed. Ugly blisters have formed on her hands and neck. Her grimy stuffed bear is covered in soot, its marble eyes staring forward accusingly.

"It Burns." Miss Pheobe mumbles in a voice clearer than Harold has heard her use. The girl than collapses, her toy dropping from her arms with a soft thud.

Tristan sniffs the air again.

''I smell sulfur. "

He looks about the immediate area.

''Right there, look-"

He points to a spot on the floor, near the cell.

"Miss Phoebe!" Harold shouts, his voice a raw croak of distress. He limps over to the young woman at high speed and drops to his knees beside her, allowing his quarterstaff to fall to the floor with a loud clatter.

"Miss Phoebe, talk to me!" Harold pleads as he gently lifts his charge and her toy into a one-armed embrace. With the other hand, he gently chafes the young woman's wrists and splashes a little water from his waterskin in her face. "Miss Phoebe! Please, open your eyes!"

"Help!" the ageing scholar shouts at the top of his lungs. "Somebody, help me! Miss Phoebe's been hurt!"

Desperate for something, anything to do, Harold casts his eyes about the room -- his eyes, and more importantly, his Eye. "Enough of this, spirit!" he hisses. "Enough! Miss Phoebe could not have done anything to you -- if you have words to say, some message to impart, then talk to me! Whatever you want, you can not get it unless you focus! Concentrate, damn you, and impart some message I can understand! I could help you!"

(OOC: Harold has no ranks in Healing, so he can't do much more than the basics.

"Perhaps that ghost we saw yesterday is lurking about in the tunnels." Julian says when Sebastian tells them of the undead presence.

History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle and forgets the blood. What ever history remembers of me if it remembers me at all, it shall only be the fraction of the truth.

UPSTAIRS-

However, the wisdom check for Ethereal Empathy is very satisfying this time: 22! Critical success with a natural twenty!

All around Pheobe's room Harold sees fire, then darkness, but the fire does not burn ...slowly the fire flickers and the darkness flashes with light. As it clears into another scene, Harold's nose is choked with the smell of burning wood, whiskey, and cigar smoke. Slowly he feels his throat tighten as a terrible pressure grasps his neck while his tonguefeels coated with dirt. You feel excitement, lust, fear, and pain. It is overwhelming-they mingle into rage.
As Harold says this, his breath becomes visible to him as the room simultaneously becomes hot and cold-like standing too close to a campfire in a blizzard.(1)

Behind Harold the door to Pheobe's room slams shut, the sound instinctively causing Harold to turn towards it. As he looks back, standing in front of the door is a small boy, about five years of age. His brown hair looks matted and dirty. Suddenly his face twists up in a scowl and his mouth stretches unnaturally long, his chin reaching nearly to his navel. The flesh on his face begins to roll and bubble and his neck becomes a kaleidoscope of black and blue. His eyes turn to milk and roll down his cheeks. His bloated tongue rolls lazily in his gaping maw. (2)

"You were murdered," Harold says, facing down the specter. "Strangled. Someone seized you by the neck and squeezed until you could not breathe anymore, until your neck bones cracked. And you were only this old."

The old scholar's raw voice is tinged with pity, and sorrow is evident on his face. "You poor child. You poor, poor child. How could they do this to you? Who were you? Who did this to you? Give me a name, a face, and I will try to bring justice down on them for doing something so horrible to a poor child."

Slowly, Harold raises a hand and balls it to a fist. "Justice like a hammer. I swear it."

A feeling of melancholy and despair wash over Harold. He can feel the boy's anguish, but he is able to shake it off as the specter approaches. He reaches his hands out to Harold as the scholar pleads with him. The boys hands become wriggling maggots moving amorphously about and his tongue elongates and becomes a terrible serpent hissing a black fork at him. (1)

Harold utters a cry of horror and rushes to his feet, carrying Phoebe with him. Mouser the owl screeches and flaps her wings, but maintains her grip on her master's shoulder.

"Please!" the old man begs as he backs away, one hand still held between him and the specter. "Stop this! I can help you - I will see justice done, I swear it, but you have to stop this! You have to help me help you!"

Despite the fear and revulsion Harold clearly feels for the ghost's transformation, his eyes are still full of pity when he looks at the ghost. "Poor boy," he whispers. "Poor, poor boy. How can people do such things to another and not even care? Poor boy..."

(OOC: Will save 8. Hrmgh. Bloody shame. Harold will back away for now, but if the ghost doesn't see reason soon, it's going to get iffy...)

The fire fades completely and Harold can see the room change again. The bed becomes larger and covered in darker, more masculine colors. The curtains on the windows change as does a small book shelf; growing tall and sprouting books until all shelves are full. Cigar smoke mingled with sobs fill the air, slowly giving way to the sound of a flute(1). Standing very close to Harold is a man with a strong, black-haired chest. Harold cannot see his face. The mans hands are moving about the boys shoulders and back in an intimate fashion. The the man vanishes but the shame remains. Slowly the walls engulf in flames again, burning away the "other" room, returning to its former look.

The boy reaches out to Harold with his horrible snake tongue. The horrific beast darts at Harold's cheek, its terrible fangs dripping blackish green ichor. (2)

The boy is changed when the snake retracts. His rage is gone, his eyes returned and no serpent fills his mouth instead dirt begins to spill forth from it, small pebbles with glowing red hot.
