A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Goren admires the new scenery from the comfort of the carriage. He has noticed how the others appear to be sweating. I still wonder why I am unaffected by the humidity yet the others are. His thoughts are interrupted by the sight of something he saw in his dream the night before.
"STOP! STOP the.... ride!" Goren's face is now pushed up against the carriage door's window, facing the way they just came. His attention is on a spot in the swamp. "Rock.... stones.... from my sleep.... I dreamed last darkness." His hand is on the door now and as soon as the carriage stops he will open the door and jump out to go over to what he saw.

Zumba also feels the heat like the others, except apparently for the red-haired outsider. Still, he is more used than them to uncomfortable temperatures, and tries to take it stoically.
Like the lash, he thinks. Unbearable but it will stop in the end.
Then as Goren alarmedly jumps out of the carriage, he follows rapidly. He thinks he understands what Goren is saying, and he did become entangled with the man in their dreams. Trampling over Vincent in his hurry, and even without presenting an apology due to the excitation, he leaves the carriage just after Goren.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
As Vincent reaches for the door handle Goren gets all excited. He doesn't understand exactly what he is trying to say, but it is clear that Zumba does understand. Before he has time to do anything the two jump out. Vincent receives an elbow and is thrown back in his seat.
Stunned by this sudden change in behavior, he welcomes the little-less-heated-air with it's smell. However, this does little to appease him. After this morning's rude awakanings and confrontation, Vincent isn't in the best of moods and getting half run over by "children", does nothing to improve it in this unbearable heat.
One hand rubs the spot Zumba hit, while the other holds the door open to look at the two running away. Seeing the run into the swamp he frowns. He grabs his gear and slowly steps out of the carriage. He turns to the coachdriver "Well monsieur, my apologies for this sudden and inexplicable stop. I am sure a man in your profession would prefer to have a speedier voyage as to be able to enjoy a well earned rest at the destination." he says. Lifting a finger "ah, but it might also be that you, monsieur, have other people to offer your services to on this unbearably hot day. Something I well understand seeing you admirable profession." Vincent stays near the coach, not wanting to follow the two "children" into the swamp, and after last night, he does not dare leave his chest in the care of someone he doesn't know, so he settles on talking to the driver. More of a monologue really. "I do not expect my two uneducated and hasty aquaintances to be too long in their endeavors. Actually I would expect them to come prancing back like children out of that" pointing at the swamp "smelly and unihabitable source of trouble. If you understand my meaning, monsieur" he adds. "Probably discussing excitedly about a cute rabbit they have witnessed" he says irritated.
OOC: I consider having my adventuring gear on me, as indicated on my character sheet.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Port d'Elhour ==> Marais de Tarascon:
The coachman stops the carriage as soon as Goren starts to shout. He looks in consternation as the priest and the Capoeira dash out of the vehicle and run up to what looks like a common roadside stone. His eyebrows rise nearly into his hairline when he understands what Vincent is implying.
"Non, non, seinjeur," he says. "I am paid to take you to Marais de Tarascon by the good Anchorites, oui? I do not go anywhere -- Seinjeurs, stop! Stop!" Suddenly terrified, the coachman runs after Goren and Zumba, arms waving wildly as he calls out for the men to halt. "No closer to the edge, seinjeurs," he begs once he has reached them. "Lac noir is close, many many loah there, always! No closer without piroque and ohi-drums to appease the loah!"
The last of the three stones sits at the very edge of the brush that once marked the edge of the swamp. It is smooth on top, worn down by years of rain and sun. The outline of an arrow, cut into the stone's surface, is just barely visible. It points into the swamp.
"I see this stone before, seinjeurs," the coachman says. He wipes his forehead with his sleeve, staining it with his sweat. "It is just an old stone. Why do you run to it so...?"
There is a sound. To those in the adventuring profession, it is a familiar sound; the snap of a bowstring released. Suddenly, an arrow is jutting from your coachman's chest. It's an ugly thing, crudely forged and barbed. And big. The coachman looks down at the thing so abruptly appeared from his chest. He opens his mouth to speak -- and blood pours out. The coachman's eyes roll up in his skull and he falls down atop the stone, blood staining its surface.
From further along the road, you suddenly hear victorious howling. The withered bushes part to reveal four hideous figures. Hulking and broad like large men, they walk upright like humans, but... they are not. One of the creatures has the muzzle of a wolf, the second a goat's face and hooves. The third has an eagle's crest, and utters that raptor's shriek as he starts to stow his shortbow. The fourth of the monstrosities has a bear's face. But all of them have human eyes and hands. They are abominations of mixed human and animal heritage. Roaring their bloodlust, the four monsters draw scythe-like swords and start towards you.
A white horse erupts from the brush behind them. Seated on the noble-looking animal is a figure in the radiant white and green of Ezra's Anchorites, his face hooded and hidden. A silver symbol of the Guardian in the Mists sparkles on his chest, a silver sword is in his hand, raised to spur the four creatures on. "She has ordered the death of these men!" the rider shouts. "Kill them! Flay them! Slay them! Eat them!" The monsters howl their willingness to obey.
Marais de Tarascon ==> Port d'Elhour:
The insects scatter and flee as the ambush is sprung. Four hulking monsters, blasphemous mixtures of man and beast, erupt from the brush, a rider on a white horse, clad in the colours of Ezra's faithful following them and spurring them on.
At this short distance, Jazelle can see a most unusual thing; the rider's clothes do not move. They shift when he moves, but they do not even twitch for the motions of his horse, nor for the feeble breeze that moves the sweltering air around.
Right now, Jazelle is unobserved by the creatures ambushing the men from the coach -- men of whom Jazelle recognizes one from her nightmare of last night! The well-dressed man, the one with the rapier who stands closest to the carriage, is the one who saved her from the terrible nightmare priest! And the figure on the horse certainly resembles that priest...
(OOC: Combat commences! Currently, the four ambushing things are 60 ft. away from the party at the carriage, which means you have one round for buffing or whatever else you want to do as preparation for battle Goren, I still need your spell list for today! Jazelle is not 60 ft. removed from the ambushing group, so you can act against them directly in this round, if you want. If you dare...)

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent watches the scene unfold before him. As he sees the four hideous creatures he takes an unconscious step back in disgust. He grabs his crossbow and starts loading it.
"My dear friends" he says to Zumba and Goren while loading his crossbow "I would like to propose to stay around the coach as we meet these awfully hideous creatures". His crossbow is loaded and he quickly and easily climbs and jumps onto the coach's roof. "My reason for this.....hmpf.....is that the coach can be used as cover and the rider has to manoever more". As he arrives on top of the coach he crouches to take aim at the rider. He is sweating from this simple exertion in this heat. "By the way, does any of you messieurs know how to drive this transport coach?"
OOC: I assumed the roof of the coach is a hard wooden surface, if not I'll crouch on the driver's seat.
Didn't know what roll you would need to get on the roof fast, so I rolled all 3 possibilities.

Sorry folks, I thought I had warned I am out of the country for the week-end. I don't have my sheet with me and although I have internet access today, I may not have on the next days. So, I'm not to be counted on this weekend
Anyway, Zumba can't throw buffs. He'll rage when the fight starts, but will rather wait for them to come close. Then strike and move away, as he can move 50ft per round.
For now, Zumba will move to near the coach in a manner to avoid charges. If he still has an attack, will try to shoot a bullet.

Goren is startled by the appearance of the fearsome foes. Then he spies the one on the horse and focuses his attention on him. Concentrating, he grips his holy symbol. Uttering words in a strange language, power surges through him and he pushes it at the figure on the white horse so as only the figure on the horse is affected.
Casting Sound Burst at the white figure. DC 15. Targeting the figure in such a way so that only he and any of his associates might be affected by the Sound Burst, and not Goren's companions.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent scrambles up onto the carriage without any trouble. He has an unparallelled view of the monsters stomping their way closer to his group -- and possibly of something more. (OOC: Vincent, roll a Spot check, DC16.)
Goren's chant goes off without a hitch. It catches three of the abominations plodding closer. They scream and clutch their heads, but the horseman stays calm and still. Even when one of the abominations crashes to the ground, goat hooves kicking the ground into dross, the rider stays still, hidden eyes surveying the battle. When Zumba lets fly his bullet, the rider makes no move to defend himself, and is soundly hit. A small stain starts to grow on the rider's chest, but rather than red, it is black.(OOC: Monsters A, B, and C and the rider catch a whallop from the Sound Burst. Monster C is stunned for one round, and so is the rider. This aids in Zumba's attack hitting him for 6 damage.)
For a moment, the monsters still on their feet falter. Then the one who remains uninjured howls like a wolf, raises his scythe-like blade and charges Goren! Galvanized by this example, his fellows charge along, abandoning their prone ally. Unlike their braver comrade, however, they charge Zumba. None of them seem very interested in the prospect of climbing up on the coach before they've slaughtered everyone on the ground.
The wolf-mouthed creature that attacks Goren gets in a cut - just barely, but still. (Goren takes 9 damage.) The two beasts attacking Zumba move to flank, and put the advantage to good use! (Zumba takes a total of 13 damage!)

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Zumba is surprised by the speed with which the others attack him. Heavily hit, he feels his fury swell to the surface, a kind of emotional charge that lends him supernatural strength. He controls it just enough to evade his adversaries first and positioning himself to remain opposite one of the adversaries. Then he releases his fury and attacks the opponent between himself and the other adversary
OOC:
Lots of things going on. Zumba does not rage at the beginning of the round. He instead tries to move and place himself 'flanking' creature A with help of creature B. He does this tumbling, and uses Daredevil Athlete to gain +5 on his Tumble check to avoid provoking AoO. His speed is 50ft, so he can walk up to 25ft. Then he rages and attacks A. Raging is a free action and gives him:
+4 Str
+4 Con
-2 AC
+8 hp
+2 Wil saves
+2 BAB
The attack is done with the quarterstaff.
After raging, Zumba has 19hp.
Rolls:
Tumbling: 1d20 + 16 = 30
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2750553/
Attack: 1d20 + 8 = 10
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2750554/
In the unlikely case that I got a hit,
Damage: 1d6+1d10+2 = 10
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2750555/
Underwhelming, I would say...

Goren grunts from the scimitar cut and staggers back. "Lathander preserve me and grant me strength!"
The priest concentrates as he grips his holy symbol. Offering a few words to the Morninglord he casts a spell.

As the creatures attack Vincent has the priest in sight, but decides to change tactics. After Zumba takes some hard beating he chooses one of those beasts to shoot at. In the corner of his eyes he sees that the priest might get a well earned surprise.
He releases a quarrel at the hiddeous beast that would be more to the rear of Zumba. "Hey!" he shouts. After shooting he let's go of his crossbow and grabs something out of his pack.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Zumba's beautiful maneuver takes the two monsters completely by surprise, and he stands opposite just one of them. The creature left behind takes Vincent's arrow in the shoulder and shrieks its agony. Goren's chant reaches its crescendo, and the wolf-muzzled foe opposite him freezes, its muscles seized up by the spell.
The monster now facing Zumba alone is taken aback by the quick reversal of its fortunes. It raises its scythe-bladed sword and manages to fend off the Capoeira's fierce attack, but its own slash is halfhearted and fails to make contact.
The creature so recently feathered by Vincent shakes its head, confused and uncertain. Its human eyes narrow in consideration, and it turns away from Zumba so it can attack Goren! The monster's blade cuts across the Cleric's shoulders while his attention is still taken by the paralyzed beast, opening a wicked gash. (OOC: Goren takes 6 damage.)
Out in the flat land between the carriage and the single rider, the beast that fell to Goren's previous spell rises to its feet. Shaking its goat's horns, the monster grounds its scythe-blade in the ground, and unslings its shortbow. It bares its square, powerful teeth as it gazes at Vincent atop the carriage and reaches for a thick, barbed arrow. The rider himself looks on, motionless.
