Threan asks:
"So did anyone in this room have this as pet or is this mouse just an unknown occupant ?"
.

Yorna answers-

''The children aren't allowed to have pets. It's just a mouse, kill it or take it with you- I don't want the little pest getting into our larders.''
BigBadQDaddy wrote:
"Ma'am, I have to apologize as I am obviously not from around the area and am rather new. But has an abduction such as this ever occurred here at this orphanage?"
Yorna-

''No, we've never had an abduction of any kind. We have had the occasional runaway, but they nearly always come back. ''

Alain doesn't recall seeing any children on his way into the room.

Inovidil and Glim walking down the boardwalk overlooking a canal, as the afternoon shadows lengthen...

''Oh, well that does sound rather like what I do, yes. I don't need a high-falutin' title such as 'mystic theurge', though. I'm just a gnome from the drylands, Inovidil. We don't put on airs.''

Blaise shares looks with Alain, Jamethon, and even Threan, and then he says to Yorna, "Thank you, we'll do our best to pick up the trail and quickly recover the children. Later, could we speak with some of the other children who were in this room? I'm sure they're upset, but they did see what happened."

Inovidil laughs with the comment.

"Well, for " just a gnome from the drylands" you and your brother do very good job. You have your smithy shop and you can also enhance items and you also help the militia. As about me, I always liked magic. Except of spellbooks, I have read many books about it. Actually have read many books about other things too, geography, history, nature. I love knowledges."

''You must be quite a scholar! I knew I liked you for some reason, Inovidil. ''

Glim stops walking and points at a two-storey plaster and timber building across a low canal-bridge. Smoke curls from the mouth of a chimney that juts up through the slate roof.

''That's our tavern. If we are lucky, we'll find the illusionist inside. ''

It takes a few minutes of careful searching, but Threan finds a trail: several faint impressions of small feet in the mud outside the orphanage, leading south for half a block down the street and ending at the edge of a filthy drainage ditch.

Threan notices a child's stocking on the ground not far away. Getting closer, he sees a trail of muddy footprints [more than one creature, maybe more than two or three...] leading into a shadowy alley that's tucked between two crumbling plaster houses.

Threan sees that the alley is about six feet wide. About four yards down the alley, a tall wooden fence cuts across his field of view, blocking from view whatever is on the other side. While examining the scene from his vantage point around the righthand corner of the alley-mouth, he spots something smaller than himself moving in the shadows, amid heaps of trash. The creature turns out to be nothing but a scrawny tabby cat , which hisses at the gnome before dashing through a hole in the base of the fence. A second look at that fence reveals muddy hand- and footprints running from bottom to top.

Moving slowly(1) for him . He sneaks up to the fence slowly then climbs it so to remain hopefully unnoticed . When he goes across the yard and climbs up the fence slowly(2) . Checking to to see what's on the other side when he gets to the top, but not being seen when doing so .

Threan moves into the alley very quietly. His little mouse friends snuggles deeper into his pocket, emitting a muffled squeal. Reaching the fence, the gnome begins to slowly climb up, grabbing the rough boards and hauling his weight up inch by inch.

Once near the top, he peeks over and sees the other half of the alley. It looks much like the area the near side of the fence. At the far end of the alley is an opening to an open street. Threan can see a cart roll past the window provided by the far opening of the alley, the driver of which is lazily flicking his whip at the mule pulling the wheeled vehicle.
