Wilhelm von Marsten is a young Darkonian boy who is the son of John von Marsten and Marta von Marsten, and together they lived in Karg. Wilhelm throughly enjoys reading poetry and storybooks more than sports or business. John von Marsten thoroughly disapproves of Wilhelm's interests as unmanly and a distraction of what the boy should properly be learning. To discourage Wilhelm from pursuing such interests, John frequently employed harsh punishments against his son, but Wilhelm kept pursuing his interests, trying futilely to hide them. As a result, bitterness grew in Wilhelm's heart, eventually causing him to run away.[1]

Wilhelm has developed several friends outside of his home. He was friendly with and a frequent customer of Anton Gezeppi, an old man whom runs Gezeppi's Books. He would often read the books and play sackball with a group of street urchin friends from Lower Karg.[2] It was with this group that he fell in after he ran away. Through them, Wilhelm wound up at Comfort House and met Kraxzat[1], a fiend whom had assumed the guise of local philanthropist Keegan Greymane.[3] Kraxzat charmed Wilhelm and so convinced him to join the violent and criminal activities of his gang, the Wild Children. After Wilhelm is pushed into murdering his parents, Kraxzat plans on transforming him into a full member.[1]
