The Ulmist Inquisition is order of psionically gifted crusaders against evil and particularly against evil lurking within the hearts of people and society. First and foremost, they target seeds of corruption that might lead people to stray from the path of righteousness. Unfortunately, their zealotry can cause them to become figures of fear and loathing in the communities they would protect and purify[1]. Although they may ally with adventurers against evil, they may also become threats to adventurers if they see darkness within the hearts of their would-be allies[2].
Known Bases of Operation
The Ulmist Inquisition maintains control over Malitain, a large independent city on the same homeworld of Barovia. The Inquisitors go forth into the rest of the multiverse to fulfill their agenda[1].
Within Ravenloft, the Ulmist Inquisition may have cells in any domain[2]. An active cell hides itself away in the catacombs beneath the Great Cathedral of Levkarest in Borca[3], and another one organizes at Saulbridge Sanitarium in Mordentshire[4].
History
Founded by the psionic priest Ulmed in the Prime Material city of Malitain, the organization went after aberrations, fiends, undead, and other preternatural menaces as well as sinister cults. Prior to his corruption, they counted Strahd von Zarovich as their ally and fought with him against Osybus and his priesthood. After Strahd fell to evil and became a vampire, Ulmed felt betrayed and changed his inquisition's mission to also include stamping out the seeds of temptation before they could germinate[1].
Ulmed sorted the Inquisition into three orders, each led by one of his three companions: Ansel, Cosima, and Tristain[1].
Orders[1]
- Order of Ansel, strict ascetics and the martial branch of the Inquisition, symbolized by the Sword
- Order of Cosima, wielders of the Mind Fire, readers and reshapers of minds
- Order of Tristain, scholars who use mind over matter and wield considerable telekinetic force, symbolized by the Tome
